Running yote optic..

When I travel out of state I hunt with friends that have dogs...
Shots will be from 0-100 running would you want a red dot type sight or a 1-4x adjustable on a 223 AR...

I have my long-range gun.. 204 AR with a 6-24x50 but need an up close gun set up..

Weaver V3 was the best I ever used. I have it on my 6.8 SPC that I used for pushing deer with blockers.

Check out the Burris Tac30 1-4. It is the best low power variable that I have used (compared to Vortex PST, Leupold VXR, Leupold VX3i,Leupold VX6).

It can be used with both eyes open like a red dot but then gives you 4x magnification for calling or ID that a RDS won't.

I've posted previously that I thought the VXR 1.25-4 would be a better choice, but after using both side by side, I can't tell a quality difference in resolution day or night, the Burris has a bigger tube by 4mm, the heavy circle reticle is fast, and it can be used at night without the illumination if you're using a light. The Burris also has some BDC drops in the reticle.

Plus it's around $200 cheaper than the other options.

The VX6 is better quality, but unless it's a duty rifle, not worth the extra $600-$800 in my case for a short range hunting gun.

I'd go with one of the 1-4 variables. I use them on my combo guns and on 1x with both eyes open they even work for flying birds.

Alpen Optics makes a great 1-6x24 with either an illuminated dot or w/o a very nice reticle for fast shooting, much like a Geran #4with a dot in the center. I've been shooting there 1.5-6x24mm(discontinued) with the same reticle but the objective bell is too large to mount low on the combo guns. This straight tube 1-6x24mm looks like it might be my next purchase.

I shoot running coyotes all the time under 100 yards and have never felt over powered with my Bushnell 2.5 x 10 4200. Wide open country here so usually set around 3x.

I really like the Leupold dot for running shots. Just put that dot out in front and pull the trigger, kind of like shooting birds with a shotgun. You can get it in the VX 2 2-7 and 3-9 or have the reticle changed by the custom shop. $75 ish.
