sabots in cva optima

I finally got my 50 cal encore to shoot using tc's sabots, so I bought tc super glide sabots and 45cal 230 xtp .451dia.
bullets to try in my cva optima. starting out with 56grs (80eqa)of 777 powder and t7 primers I got on the 8"x10" target at 70yds. two shots groups were 2" apart until I got zero on to dc. the next shot went about 7"low.I switched to BH209 with fed209a primers and could not hit the paper.I did not get to use my 209 breech plug as it has not arrived yet. is it possible that the 209 breech plug can make that much difference? spike

its just the different powder causing it to be off so bad. Any time you do something like that, you have to restart at 25 yards and dial in the scope for that load.

When using T7 make sure you clean the bore after each shot.

what I was asking did the breech pug for the BH209 in the optima make that much difference. I shot the t7 powder and the sabots running a wet patch then a dry one and the groups were not as good in the optima as they were with the encore using BH209. I then tried BH209 in the optima, it was on at 25yds, the next shot did not hit paper at 70yds. I am new to using sabots, but have shot muzzle loaders for more than 45yrs. I have a tc hawken flint lock in 50cal that shoots round balls well, the maxi balls I cast not so well past 50yds. I know the flint lock has a 1-48 twist and is not good with maxi balls. the two encores I have with 1-28 twist will not shoot maxi ball, power belts, hornady fpb's good past fifty yds shooting t7 powder and t7 primers. the encore shoots 300gr sabots with BH209 and fedA primers good at 70yds. when the optima was erratic at 70yds with t7 powder I stwitch to BH209.

I am still waiting my BH209 breech for the optima, the optima's breech plug facing the powder is flat, the encore's is concave. that is why I asked if the BH209 breech plug for the optima will make that much difference. spike

I can't say the original CVA breech plug was that bad, but
the BH209 breech plug did fix a slow drift to the right
as the bore fouled problem with the original CVA breech
plug. The clean bore shot with the original CVA was always
4-5" left of the point of aim, and on subsequent shots, it
drifted towards the point of aim. The BH209 breech plug
shot 2" high on the clean bore shot, and then grouped 1.5-2"
at the point of aim. This was with 295 gr. tipped Powerbelts,
Win 209 primer, and a near max. weighted charge of Blackhorn 209
powder, shot at 100 yards off a rest and rear bag. I am much
happier with the BH209 breech plug, but of course your mileage
may vary.

I have the optima and shoot bh209 I can't remember if I had a point of impact change between the 2 breech plugs. With the original breech plug I got a lot hang fires when the temps got cold. The bh209 breech plug has been fine down in the low teens. I have found with my gun that the 300 grain 45cal xtp shot the best in a hornady black sabot. Messed around with a bunch of 44 cal bullets/sabots never got the consistancy that I have with the 300 grain xtp. My load is 90grain volume BH 209, cci 209m primer. This will group around 1.5 2 inches at 100 yards for me.

well I finally got my BH209 breech plug for the optima and it has a tool that fits in the plug incase it should be hard to remove. the tool was not with the new optima and I wondered what the recess was in the face of the original plug, now I know.

the other day I shot the optima with the original breech plug with the flat face and used T7 powder pellets and T7 primers and tc yellow sabots and 230gr hornady xtp bullets. the results were not good at 70yds.

today with the BH209 breech plug and granular T7 powder T7 primers the results were better. I shot ten times and counting the two wide shots the group was 4", the other six were two clusters inside the black 2 3/4" apart at 70yds.
the next step is to use the BH209 powder with the fedA primers and the tc 300gr black sabots.

the results I found is the BH209 plug is similar to the encore breech on the part that faces the granular powder as they are both concave. spike

No, that tool is to seat the face of the breech plug. Install the plug by hand and then with the tool, TIGHTEN it real snug, back it off and then you can just use your fingers to install/remove.
