Saturday Hunt

Have a friend that is moving to Vermont this week, we went out 2 times together last year so we decided to go out for 1 last hunt together. I hunt alone most the time. I normally dont hunt them this time of year. On our first stand I had 1 howling and barking a warning and never could get him to come in. He was withing 500 yds. After it was done we discovered that he was in the only place that he could have seen my truck.

On the way to our next stand we saw 2 of them standing along the road. We were not able to get a shot. The next stand produced nothing.

On the third stand, we walked about a half mile. It was flat so I got on my knee so that I could see better. I started looking left to right and spotted on walking 100 yds out. He did not even know we were there. We had not even blown the call yet. He was not very lucky. I took him out with 1 shot from the AR. He never knew what happened. We called for another 20 minutes but nothing else showed. The next stand also produce nothing.

On the fifth stand I had just finished the third series of calls and saw a coyote on my left. The wind was blowing right to left, he had to have crossed my scent. He turned and came straight at me. At 40 yds he either saw me or finally smelled me. He turned on a dime and was running as fast as he could, 180 degrees the other way. I should have had the shotgun. I was not lucky enough to connect with him. This was the first stand ever made with my FX3. The next 2 stands produced nothing. The wind had picked up after the fifth stand.

From the sign I saw, this could be a good year.
