SAVAGE 10 ML

Do any of you guys have a savage 10 ml smokeless muzzleloader? Would you get better accurracy using smokeless powder over pyrodex or is the accurracy in the barrel? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I get ~1" groups with smokeless powder. There is NO REASON to use pyrodex or other BP substitutes as they can't come close to creating the horsepower that smokeless does.

I have one and it too shoots 1" groups at 100 yrd off the bench. I have never used any powder but 5744 (44 gr) with a Hornady 250 gr bullet. He is a great link that should answer any 10 ML questions. www.randywakeman.com /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I helped a friend site one in a month ago. First load we tried with some AA powder shot right at an inch and about 2300 FPS. That was good enough for him to head to the tree stand so we did no more shooting. We plan to test more when it warms back up to dial it in better.

Some of the 150gr rated ML's will produce similar volocities. The reason I bought one & would quickly buy another is SMOKELESS!!!!! That means WAY less cleaning & noncorosive powders!!!!!!!!!

I can get 2300fps from an Omega with 150 grs. of either Triple Se7en pellets or Pyrodex pellets and a 200 gr. Shockwave, BUT, with my Savage 10ML-II I can get the same velocity with a 300 gr. Shockwave/SST using smokeless powder. And as stated above, there's absolutely no reason to use Pyrodex or subs in a 10ML-II unless your state doesn't allow smokeless powders in ML's. In that case, there are several other ML's that would fill the bill better than the Savage. The corrosive powders would be a major pain in the Savage when it comes to cleanup time. The Savage is capable of excellent accuracy using the smokeless powders that it was designed for. Here is a 100 yd. three shot group from my 10ML-II that I shot recently while checking my zero before muzzleloading deer season.

what is the max range using the smokeless, 200-225 yards?

I like to sight in for +3" at 100 yds. and that puts me just a couple inches low at 200 yards. Anything over 200 yards or so, then you should use a rangefinder and need to know the holdover for your scope or to make adjustments on the elevation knob for that distance. The only way to know for sure is practice at the range at the longer distances to see where your gun impacts. A good smokeless load with a 250-300 gr. bullet has killing power past 200 yards if you're able to make the shot cleanly.
