I traded for a Savage model 110 in 270win. My question is I would like to convert it to either a 243 or 223. Can I change the bolt face to shoot the 223 and what else is involved besides changing the barrel?

Your magazine is going to be a lot different going from 270 to 223. I don't know if the magazine box for 223 sized cartridges will fit in a long action.

I did this one year I drew a deer tag. Fairly simple if the tools are available. I went from 223 to 243. What was required was a barrel, bolt head, magazine box. Use your bolt to headspace. The notorious savage barrel nut can be tough to loose. but once done any following barrel swaps are even easier.

Go to the savage arms website and look at the calibers you can have in a long action,(110). Then if what you want is there you will need to change bolthead, barrel and follower. Maybe more i haven't looked, that will give you a starting place as well as savage shooters website for parts. You will have to join to get to use the classfieds there, well worth the $12. blue

I have the 110 in .223 and it is a fine gun. I just bought a 6.5-284 long range hunter from Savage and it is awesome, also a long action rifle. If I were to replace the barrel on your rifle I would look into this. You should be a reloader for this as Norma 130g cost me $49/20. The 6.5-284 will handle any game the .270 can and at a longer range and also a varmint gun. Brass and dies are now more available than locating factory ammo. If loaded at under 2900 or loads similar to the 6.5 Swedish the barrel life will not be a problem. You crank out 140g to 1000yds and its another story.

If I was going to make the switch, I believe I would go with something other than 223-243. Mainly just because you can, for conversation sake. I'm thinking 6mm AI, 243AI, something not everyone else is shooting... But don't be afraid to leave that 270 just how it is, my brother an I both have Savage 110's in 270 and they both shoot sub 1 inch groups with both factory and handloads.

To answer your question, yes you can. I took my original long action stainless 116 in .223 and built it into a .243. w/ a $40 never fired take off bbl. You will need a barrel, barrel wrench, bolt head and mag box w follower. I can now go back and forth between .223 and .243 if I want to and can also go .308, .260, 7mm08 w/ just another bbl. Can also go .270, 30-06 etc. if I want with bbl and mag because I started with a long action. I love the Savage 110 almost as much as the AR for cartridge swaping.

I went from a 30-06 to a 6mm rem. I love the 6 rem. You dont need a short action, but for a 223 I wouldn't recomend your current action. For a 243 win. I think the long action would be alright. If you have any questions fire off a PM. I just did my conversion this past year and learned alot about rifles doing it. Good luck
