Savage 110 Re-barrel suggestions.

I’ve got an older LA Savage 110 .243 that I’m thinking of re-barreling, and Trashcan’s thread from last winter got the wheels turning in my head. My only deer rifle currently (besides the Savage) is a sporterized M96 6.5x55. I’d like to turn the Savage into a “longer range than the M96” deer rifle. Since it’s a long action I’m not concerned with staying with a .308 based cartridge, but I want to use the same bolt. I’ll be reloading for it. The ammo that I got with the M96 is about gone, so I’m going to have to start soon anyway. I’ve not loaded any rifle rounds as of yet, but I have done a few .40s and .45s. I’d kinda like to stay with the 6.5mm, but that’s not crucial.
I’m looking for your ideas as to possible chambering, barrel configuration (length, twist, etc.), and stock recommendations. I know there isn’t one right answer; I’m just looking at possibilities. So what’s your suggestion for a ~400yd deer rifle that will work with the 110? Also if you can recommend a source for the parts I’ll need would be great too. Thank you in advance.

Do you reload? Have you thought about a 243AI? If you reload how about the 6.5x47 lapua with a fast twist barrel. Shilen makes great barrels already chambered and threaded.

My .260 tactical is based off a 110 savage flatback action using a krieger 24" bull barrel in 1:8. It does weigh in at 12lbs as it's set up, (bench shooting) so i would use a lighter barrel for a all day carry rifle.

The .260 has a great b.c. for long range work and if the rifle is assembled properly will stay sub moa at distance. That is of course if the shooter is up to it. blue

If you really need a new barrel stay with 243win. With cost of a new barrel you could buy a new rifle. If you want a 400yd deer rifle you need to go to a 7mm or 30cal. You will need good glass to see a deer at 400yds.

A vendor on the Savage shooters website has factory new .25-06 sporter barrels for $85 plus shipping. This is the route I would take. PM me if interested in more information.

That's a no brainer. If you want to stay with the 6.5 caliber, go 6.5-284. Even though it is a short action case, it works best in a long action. It will get you your 400+ The 6.5 bullets have the best B.C. in usable hunting weights.

If you want to stay with 6.5, do another 6.5x55. You can buy one set of dies, and brass/bullets/powder in a larger quantity to save money. Also handloading should make the 6.5x55 really shine. Factory loads are kept tame because of old actions. You can get some good performance with that case while staying at reasonable pressures for modern brass/actions/barrels. May sound boring, but to be honest it is the logical choice for you.

If I were re-barreling it though, I would do a 280ai.

This....but I personally would do a 284 over a 280ai.

Id have to dissagree with that. A 25-06 will pass through a heavy deer at 400 with no issue. I retired my 30 cals for anything lighter than elk. Im not recoil sensitive but might as well make a hunt as pleasant as possible and deer are easy to kill. No reason to go to the mags or even a 30-06 if thats as heavy an animal as youll be chasing.

Any calibers besides the 25? Im building a 358 winchester on a savage action, havent ordered the barrel yet. I trades one of my 25's for a short action just for this build. The 25 i kept has been very good to me!

Wow, thank you all. I have some 'ciphering to do now I guess. Are most of these suggested calibers shown in common reloading manuals? Where's the best place to find the specs to compare?

6.5 284 would be my choice if yow want to stay with the 6.5. You can by a 26in shilen on savage shooters forum from NSS for $299 plus shipping. Its becoming one a real popular hunting cal.
