Savage 112 BVSS .223 Loads

I have a Savage 112 BVSS in .223. Haven't fired it in over 11 years.

26" Barrel 1:9 twist.

Can anyone recommend some loads for me? I have Varget on hand but I'm not opposed to getting a new powder. If memory serves I was loading 748 behind 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips with great results... but I lost my load data notebook since then and my memory isn't the best.

The forever benchrest standard(which is NOT a max load) is 26.6gr Win 748 behind a 55gr bullet. Personally I shoot 27gr.

Dr. Denton Bramwell did a series of tests on...Everything. But found Varget to be a poor choice for the 223 when shooting gets heavy, and the barrel temps rise.

If you shoot on the cheap, keep the velocity down with that twist. MV * 720 / Twist = RPM

Cheap/older bullets(TNT, SXSP, Dogtown, VN) are limited to around 240-260,000RPM
Snozler is around 300,000, Hornady is around 290,000 and Sierra Blitzkings are 320,000.

Use Varget with 69's all the time. I also use it with the VMax's down to the little ones. No problems. There might be better choices, but why clutter up the loading bench. Never heard a Yote complain about the powder of choice. As for target shooting, it works just fine for the .223. Don't make life too complicated. In my bolt gun, the 69 with 25 gr. of Varget is a very nice load.

You have the same gun that I am holding in my avatar, except that I had it rebarrelled to .223 AI about 3 years ago or so.

Back when it was just a plain old .223 I tried a load that I had never used before that a friend urged me to try. It was the 50 grain Vmax with 26 grains of Varget and the CCI BR primer. I was sceptical that this load would shoot good in a 1-9" twist but I gave it a try. Yeah! This was the first load that I ever shot through my gun where all five shots made one ragged hole in my 100 yard target. Man, but I was hooked! Later when out in Wyoming taking prairie dogs I changed the load somewhat to the 50 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. Any prairie dog at 400 yards was in deep doo-doo if I got him in my crosshairs.

You might just give this load a try. It has been a shooter in my other .223 rifles as well. I bet that you get good results with it. It is fairly low pressure too and with brass prices going up all the time that's a bonus to me.
