i have been looking at both of these rifles pretty hard. savage is 150 less than the 700. both are like new never fired. i just dint know what you guys would think was the better prairie dog rifle? i like both of them pretty well equal. thanks lee

Hi Skeetlee,
The 22-250 is a great 400yard gun that can handle animals up to the size of goats. The 204 is a great 400 yard gun that can handle up to the size of coyotes. The slightly less amount of bang noise from a 204 doesn't spook the naighbourhood as much as a 22-250 and you get tospot your own fire rounds (great for knowing where they are falling). If you do not intend shooting up to goats then I highly recommend a 204 for small varmint.

As for Savage vs Remington. Savage 12BVSS with the right load will punch one hole. The Remington had been fitout and can punch one hole. ???

I have a 22-250 12BVSS. It shoots rabbits up to goats. It's bigtime loud!

Well, I have Savages and I have Rem 700's. For the money you cant beat a Savage- period. That is a fact. I love my Remmys and will never part with them but go get you a Savage 12 or whatever and put some good ammo in it and a good scope on it and shoot half inch 100 yard groups with it from the gitgo. And if you ever toast the barrel, you can swap it out all by yourself. You may or may not like the Savage trigger, but chances are if you start out with it you will like it. It feels funny if you are used to something else.

Get what your pocketbook lets you get. My vote is for the Savage. Spend the money you saved towards some good glass for it.

It seems the Savages may have the edge on out of the box accuracy at this time period. Their not a purty as the Remington's though.

I shoot a Remington VLS 243 for my ground squirrel rifle. It's to heavy for a calling rifle.

My favorite rifle in the past two years. The CZ 527 Varmint in 204 Ruger.

If you are serious about shooting colony varmints you might want to rethink the 22-250. It is quite easy to burn up a barrel in less than a week. A 223 will last about 7 times as long.

Now if you will only shoot 100 rounds once a year, the 22-250 will work just fine.

With the Savage you could get a .223 barrel and bolt face with the $150 yuo save and have both guns. Shoot the .223 alot and the 22-250 for some longer range or more explosive fun.

i have a few 223's and now a 204. i have a but load of brass for a 250, so i was thinking i need a 250. make sence! i think the remington 700vs is one of the most attractive guns i have ever seen, and i have had 2 of them, but they were one inch guns at best. i have never had a savage and i like the way the 12bvss looks. and they are supposed to shot pretty good to. like i said the savage is new and around 600 and the 700vs is new but around 750. just dont know if i want to spend the extra cash on the remmy. i have bought a cz 527 204 this week and ordered a rock river predator persuite last month. so this will be my last purchase for a while.
i was also thinking that i could have a barrel made for the savage and have a switch barrel for long distance yote hunting. i guess i have answered my own question, i think i will give the savage a try. thanks lee

Switch it up and give the savage a try. They are very accurate and you won't have to get a trigger job like you would with the remington. As you can see below I have both the VS and the model 12, if they were in the same caliber I would have a hard time choosing which one goes with me squirrel hunting.
