SAVAGE 17 WSM

I sold my Savage B Mag with the skinny barrel and bought a stainless heavy barreled 17 WSM yesterday. It is cutting holes at 40 yds, and shooting quarter size 5 shot groups at 100 yds. I am happy with that, but I expect it to shoot even better when my Boyds stock arrives! I'll be able to use a bipod. These flimsy, cheap plastic stocks are terrible!
This crow was 116 yds.

I don't really get why these thin barrelled 17's and 22's don't shoot well. You can get a pencil barreled center fire that shots well.

The problem with these Savages is the cheap plastic stocks! I cant believe the poor quality. They are crooked and they flex with little effort. They even flex at the grip!
Everyone knows that it doesn't take much pressure on a barrel to throw off the point of impact..especially on a small barrel. Savage needs to get their act together and start putting a rigid stock on these guns.

Yep, totally agree. Junk plastic stocks but with a decent Boyd's stock they are nice enough gun. I have the heavy barreled stainless B-Mag as well and it shoots just fine (right around 1" @ 100 on avg.) for what it is and what I use it for. I smoked a starling at 160 yards yesterday, and starlings aren't very big. A crow @ 150+ yards looks HUGE in the scope compared to a starling.

I ordered a Boyds stock for my stainless heavy barreled B Mag, before I got the gun! I knew it was needed! It should be here in a few days.

I was shooting today, from a picnic table and a sandbag, at a target set at 50 yds. First shot was with a freshly cleaned barrel. It shot a tad high. The next 3 cut a cloverleaf group. That's not too bad with a cheap flimsy plastic stock! Cant wait for my Boyds stock to arrive!

Please update your report after you have used the new stock. I'm interested now that there seems to be ammo around. My local big 5 had it in stock last week for $17.99 and Midway has it. I have 2 17hmr's and am interested in something else. Thanks

I certainly will do that! The 17 WSM ammo is plentiful in my area. The average price is $17 per 50.

Now I'm really interested. What kind of stock did you order from Boyd's? I'm not a real hands-on guy so I'm a little hesitant about changing stocks. Do you just take off the old and bolt the action and barrel to the new stock or are there other steps involved? This would be a late summer or fall project for me, (budget) but I just ordered 500 rounds of ammunition. I'll keep my eyes open for a deal on a new scope, probably a Burris Predator Quest 4.5-14 with the Ballistic Plex reticle.

I ordered the Boyds Hunter model. Total cost with shipping was $109. Just remove a couple bolts from the bottom of the B Mag stock to separate the stock from the action and barrel.

I broke down and just ordered a B-mag with the stainless heavy barrel. I decided to go ahead when it doesn't show up on the Savage website anymore, just the skinny barrel and the new target model with the heavy SS barrel. I shoot left handed so I can't use the thumb hole stock. After I shoot it a few times, I'll order a Boyd's stock. I have two left handed 17HMR's, Savage model: 93R17 BTVLSS and a CZ 452, so this will be my first right handed bolt but I don't think it should be a problem. With CA. laws it will be about 2 -3 weeks before I get my hands on it. Shipping, paperwork and 10 day wait. I'll post feedback after my first range trip.

just kidding. good luck. hope you get one that shoots.

I've had two, and they both have shot good. I prefer the heavy barrel. I plan on shooting quite a bit...so I stocked up on ammo!

I like the idea of the 17wsm round but I just cannot bring myself to get a bmag. Ive handled probably close to 10 of them and they all just seem like a piece of garbage. I cant stand the stocks and everyone that I have held has the most gritty, hard to open and close bolt of any rifle I have ever handled. That and I generally dont like savages all together so there is not much appeal for a bmag.

Im hoping ruger puts out a nice 77/17 although it will probably have a price tag that I dont think I will like for a rimfire.

I had to do a little trimming on my boyds stock. You'll need to keep the escutcheons from the stock stock. The holes on the boyds stocks needs reamed out for the escutcheons to fit. It did on mine at least.

Most of the trimming I did was scraping the finish and cleaning up the burrs from the milling process. Nothing major.

CBH, I think you have the makings of a fine groundhog rifle, that is if you can find any that the coyotes have left alone.
