savage 342

I have a savage 342 22 hornet passed down from a grandfather. I have the want to fix this thing up, but I am having a huge problem.

If any of you are familiar with this rifle, it has a crazy sadle scope mount on it, and the rings are only 1/2" rings (I THINK?) Is there anywhere out there I can get a new side sadle mount for this gun with 1" rings, allowing me to put a bigger/better scope on it.

If not, what are you recomendations for new optics on this with that small of rings?

weaver sells them, they are for 1 inch scopes. i have a savage 340 and its the same as the 342. does your rifle have the screw holes for the mount? some had them some didn't. it is possible that you will have bolt interference with it. i believe i might have a extra one laying around, i will have to look.

I beleive I have the holes for screws

but not having access to my gun until the weekend, I wouldnt know for sure. I think I may just have the small screws on the bottom of the mount?

there should be 4 screws on the left side of the receiver. my receiver had 4 screw plugs installed and i had to remove them to install the mount. the mount i have is a 2 piece mount.

thanks for the great info! Does using a scope 1" interfere with the bolt running? I know someone said that it may, but what do I do to avoid this??

i had to reshape my bolt knob to use my scope,it just barely touched the eye piece on the scope. you can take it to a smith and he can heat and bend the bolt down some if you want to. i took my bolt and ran it across a polishing wheel until it wouldn't touch,on my rifle it wasn't that much that i needed to take off. yours might be alright or it might need some work. you will have to mount a scope to find out unfortunately.

anyone here know where I could get replacement barrels/stocks/triggers any parts for this savage?

I want to make this a project gun, and see if I cant make it a good target shooter this summer.

the only info I am able to find googling, is where to get a new 4rd mag.....

this may just have to be a clean it up real good/sand and restain stock, kind of a job...

krieger, shilen, hart all have good barrels. your gunsmith can chamber and thread the barrel for you. the only place i could find stocks for the 342,340 is at boyds stocks. here is a site that might help you. it has some good info on the 340,342 savage gunsmithing the savage

Weaver 49350 1" high rings
Weaver #1 base
Might need to inlet stock
Can't use most modern scopes, look for something like a Weaver K series.

It doesnt effect mine but it's close.

The mount on mine puts the scope off center of the barrel about .125" toward the bolt side.

Don't really care for that but it still works.

Think I can mill it out to correct that,or,if I have to, I can buy another mount.

Accurate as heck as it is so maybe I should just leave it alone.

E gunparts (numrich) has alot of parts for these.

Alot of them are intechangable between the brands like stevens but some arent.

Browse their site and see what they have.

The savage 340, stevens 325, and springfield 840 are essentially the same gun.

Some parts are interchagable like I previously said but that doesnt mean they are all.

There are different models and slight variances just to let ya know.

Great Project!

My best guess is that the current rings are 3/4". You might consider a search for a 3/4" scope. I know Redfield made a nice little 3/4" 4X model and I bet there are some other acceptable units out there these days.

Sometimes less is more. It would be an economical first try. Then if it doesn't suit you try a more aggressive change.

I think I have a 3/4" scope that came on a .22 Marlin M60 in a gun show box some where. If you determine that the rings are 3/4" I would be happy to send it to you, no charge to get you up and running. Just for fun...No strings.
