Savage 93 .17hmr claims 2 coyotes at 187 yds and 197 yds video

Finally got a chance Saturday to try out my new Carver calls. I had received them the week before as a birthday present from my wife. Also got the DVD "21 days of coyote heaven". My son and I watched it Tuesday and we were both itching to get out there. Awesome video. My son went to a birthday party at a friends, so I was on my own. I decided to take my Savage .17 hmr instead of my .223 R-15 Remington. The savage has a camera mount on the scope. I wanted to try and get a kill shot on video.

I started off at the first stand using the swift call. I heard several dogs howling on the other side of this hill. I couldn't close the deal. Never even saw them. I've probably over called this area. I got 9 out of there just last month. I tried several stands with no success. Around 2 pm I stopped and talked with this rancher. He tells me the area has been hit hard the last 2 months. Also he reminds me its mating season for coyotes. I got the Big dog howler, but i suck at it. Time to break out the e-caller and start talking dirty to these dogs.

On the next stand I park the truck behind this huge rock outcrop on the edge of this wide open area. I walk around to the other side, set up the Primos Alpha Dogg, climb up into the rocks, and start to call. I start off with a female invitation howl. Wait about 3 minutes. Then I go to the young answer howl. I have the camera mounted on the scope, but I'm not recording. I'm thinking if anything were coming, it would be coming in front of me. I thought wrong. Before I knew what was going on I had 2 dogs coming in hot from around the back of the outcrop where the truck was parked. They went straight to the caller, realized [beeep], turned ran straight towards me, get 10ft infront of me, see me scrambling to get the camera turned on, and then turn and haul butt out into the open. I'm struggling to get in position, I'm barking the whole time. Finally I get situated, bark 2 more times, she stops, I shoot, she drops. 187 yards with a .17hmr 17gr Hornady Vmax. She spun a few times then dropped right where I Shot her. You can tell in the video how much i had to adjust to get the shot. It's a bit shaky.

The third stand after that was a bit different. Start off female invite howl, then young answer, then challenge barks, and finally back to female invite howls. After about 12 minutes, on the other side of this draw, I spot a white face in the sunlight. This is a young one cautiously sneaking a peek at the commotion. She is taking her time. I'm getting nervous thinking she is going to split any second now. She finally moves out into the open. She stops, I shoot, she goes into a spin, I shoot again, she drops. 197 yds. The furthest I have ever shot a coyote with the Savage 93 .17hmr. Every coyote I have ever shot with that gun was recovered. The farthest one has ever gotten was about 20 yds, and that was a 150 yard shot. Of course I'm only talking about 7 dogs and about 4 fox, but still not bad. Check out the video on the link below the photo.

Good stuff Man... it's really good seeing coyotes killed with those lighter calibers... especially with video... super good.... get some more...

That's amazing for an HMR at those distances. It looked like there was an exit on the first one. I could see the dust kick up behind it.

You certainly have the trajectory figured out. Nice going.

I saw the same thing!

To the OP, that is same great shooting. Good job!

I'm very impressed. I didn't think the 17 HMR would do that past 80-100 yards. Maybe I'll keep mine after all. And it definitely looks like a through shot with that kick up of dust on the other side of that first one.

That was awesome! I've been awaiting to see some HMR kills. I was always hesitant to take mine out but that proves to me that it can be done.

Great shooting!

I would like to see a little CSI autopsy on those coyotes. The first bullet clearly passed through, but I couldn't tell on the second dog. If you skinned them out, do you have pics of the entrance and exit holes?

Again, those are great videos of even better shooting. Congrats!

I took the head off an old cheap tripod I had and retrofitted it on the scope. The camera is a small Sony HD Camcorder I bought for around $400. It has a 42x extended zoom for the close up shots. It takes great videos. The video quality is actually way better than what you saw. I had to down size it because of how big the file is. Thanks.

Thanks Shankbone. Sorry, no CSI autopsy report. I'm not in the fur trade business. Maybe if the prices were a little better. I can say that on the first one there was hardly a drop of blood. There were no sizable exit holes or entrance holes that I could see. Of course I didn't really examine it all that much. Even in the photos you don't see any blood. I'm guessing mostly enternal damage and possibly a fragment that exited through the other side. Those Hornady Vmax bullets really explode when they hit. The second bled allot. It took a couple shots to get her down. Its hard to really see where the shots hit because of the camera shake from the recoil of the shot. I'll try to get more info on the next one I kill. It seems shooting coyotes with a .17hmr is a touchy subject here. A lot of doubters. I'm more a believer now than I ever was. I have killed 7 coyotes and 4 fox with this gun. I know that's not a whole lot, but when you consider that every coyote and fox that I have hit with the .17 hmr went down within 20yds of where I shot it, that's not bad. I killed my first coyote ever with this gun. Dropped it at about 30yds. Didn't spin, just dropped. That was about 10 years ago. I stopped using it after I bought my Remington R-15 .223. It turns out all I really needed was a bipod.

Thanks for the reply. I look forward to your future autopsy photos and videos.

I use this camera mount which mounts to the scope, with the camera on top... it really works well.

copy and paste the link into your search window... I can't get it to do it automatically.
