Savage axis .223

Anyone own one of these rifles? Walmart has one for $269 without scope. Thinking about getting one. Curious if anyone liked or disliked it after they bought it. Cheapest rifle that I wouldn't mind having for target and a few coyotes here and there.

Bought one for my son last year. It's the most accurate gun he owns and he is very good with it. If I didn't already have a Tikka I'd buy one.

I own 2. heavy barrel 223 and sport barrel 223. for coyote hunting the regular trigger is fine. I use my axis heavy barrel with accu trigger 55gr v max on ground hogs at 200yards I can hit them in the head. pretty good if you ask me.

you can also get a boyds stock for it for $100

When I was hunting coyotes, this was the best gun I ever used for them. Cleaned up the trigger and rolled my own ammo. It loved Sierra 60gr HPs. That being said, it would do fine with just about any factory ammo or reloads in the 55-60gr flavors. I was actually playing around one day with some factory 55gr FMJ ammo and the gun was shooting like a champ. Very good calling rifle.

I have a 223 and 22-250 axis the 22-250 has a Tunney trigger but they both shoot half moa at 200 yards with my reloads.

Bought a .223 Axis when it called the Edge. Shot decent for accuracy out of the box, despite its heavy trigger pull and the plastic stock that had a flex in it that caused the cross hair in my scope to climb up to 1/2" on a 100 yd target before the trigger released when shooting from benchrest. Had a couple of other guys at range take the rifle to their benchrests and they verified the upward cross hair movement when pulling the trigger. I solved this problem by making a wood stock for the rifle and also tinkered with the trigger to improve its pull. By the way, never was happy that in order to eject the brass in my Axis, it took a firm-fast pull on the bolt handle.....otherwise, brass would fall off bolt face in the receiver.

I purchased a .223 Heavy barrel Marlin XS that was more accurate with a better factory trigger. So, my Axis is now a 6x45.
