Savage Axis action?

I am thinking on buying one of these rifles so I can use the action for a build. Has anyone tried this? How did it work?

a model 12 would be better but the guys on the Savage forums are building off them. Probably be fine but the Model 12 might have more after market parts available.

IMHO, for a build, get a Savage 10/11/12/16. The Axis is cheap for a reason. If you're going to put a custom barrel on this don't screw around with the cheaper action. Price difference is not that great.

The biggest issue with them is lack of aftermarket stocks you can get a couple sharp shooter Supply, Boyd's, then met does make a chassis. So if your a McMillan or manners stock person they don't do them for the axis. That is the biggest problem i see. There are parts available for them it's just limited. I'm doing a build off one right now it's a 22-243 with a Boyd's at one stock Timney trigger Egw rail BHW barrel Sharp Shooter timed and trued the action. Northland Shooter supply recoil lug and barrel nut. Local smith is pillar and skim bedding it. My first build tried to do it on a budget next time maybe it will be off a Remington or savage 10.

I've used an Axis 223 rifle for a build....did OK. Shoot with a gent who is prone to rebarrel factory rifles. Guess he's done at least 4 Axis rebarrels. Factory trigger leaves a lot to be desired, so it'll need work or replacement. Both of us have had little problem breaking free the barrel from the Axis action and removing it. However, both of us had a heck of a time removing the barrel nut from the barrel.....due to the darn beads stuck in the threads. If I ever rebarrel another Axis, I'll have a new barrel nut handy to use.

I watched a few videos on youtube today. A guy wanted a 1000 yard rifle for under $500. He used an Axis rifle and put it in a Boyd's stock. Caliber was 7mm-08 and he actually did pretty good considering it was a sporter barrel. He even used a Simmons scope. Most of his matchs were shot at Red Castle gun club in Tulsa and he shot the 600 yard matchs. The 1000 yd match got rained out I think he said.

Great actions for the money. I have a custom 260rem built off a savage axis II action with a 20" mcgowen varmint taper barrel that is pillared and bedded in a boyds pro varmint stock and it will shoot 1 hole groups at 100yds all day for me.

I have a full custom axis I built for bench rest comp. in 223. I can hang with the 6br if it's not windy. It's better than 10-12 action with little work. I had mine machine for normal recoil lug it's bedded in [beeep] dog tracker stock
