savage axis matte finish????

Looking to pick up a 243 for deer, predator, and varmit. Been looking at various brands -- a Savage Axis caught my eye --price is low $300's. This rifle is going to be used and will most likely be rattling around in a truck most of its life. My question is the matte finish --I have no experience with it and want to know how it holds up to wear and rust. Any thoughts out there-- thanks in advance.

Several of my guns have the matte finish. I prefer it over the shiny blueing. I think it holds up to rust better and believe it is a thicker coat than what blueing is therefore holds up to wear better. I also prefer the looks of it. To me matte is the only way to go if its available on the gun your looking at.

I have a Savage Axis XP in the 25-06. It is the camo with matte black finnish and scope. I love the heck out of that rifle. I have been out hunting about 6-10 times since I got it in November. I have had the barrel resting on rusty old fences and it has hit tree limbs and been in the dirt and I have had no problems with it. I give it an A++ on matte finish. It is my first hunting rifle and I love it. I have shot a few others though and have to say that I like this one the best. I would post a couple pictures but I don't know how.

The matte finish will hold up as well as any other finish. I have a Savage Edge, and it shoots very well. My only issue with the rifle is the lousy, non-adjustable, stock trigger. I did some work on it to make it reasonable, but from the factory it was like 7 pounds - not good.

I do have to say one thing about not being able to adjust the trigger. I just have the plain jane trigger myself and I adjusted it. I got rid of alot of the distance of pull. Instead of being able to pick up the rifle off the ground with the trigger. I can can barely get it to move when i go to pick it up. I thought about cutting one of the coils off of the spring to make it a bit lighter than what it is. I called Savage to see how many lbs the trigger was at and they said it can range from 3.5 lbs to 7.5 lbs because they just grab from a mixed bucket of springs. If you would like me to, i will explain ine detail how i went about doing the adjustments.

Triggers not that bad unless you have little girly hands

6.5 pounds but clean on mine. It took less than 15 minutes to drop it to 2or 3 and just as clean. It shot touching groups to start, did it easier after.

A heavy trigger on whats designed initially to be a budget and 1st rifle is a good idea imo. Expecting a light and custom is a touch unreasonable. Kind of like complaining a new kia makes for a crappy race car.

Your analogy would be better if it was about complaining a new Kia doesn't have power steering. That's an option that would cost very little, but it's much appreciated. Just like a lighter spring from their "spring bucket", to give a 3 to 4.5# trigger would have been very inexpensive for them, and much appreciated by the shooter.

Yea I just called to see how heavy the trigger pull was and then when he gave me that range it kind of threw me through a loop. I just asked why it was such a brosd range and he said they just grab them and put the springs and on place and they get mixed up. I just think that there should be set number. I am thinking of takeing my rifle in to get it tested for how many lbs of pull it is at.
