Savage barrel replacement

I'm looking at buying a little older savage model 10 in 223. I'm really thinking of getting it to build my first "custom" rifle. I've been through some of the regular interweb stuff and I'm pretty certain I can do it. But here's were I'm in a little of a knot. Who's the barrel maker of choice for the PM guys? You guys branish those opinions...

For a pre-threaded, pre-chambered Savage replacement barrel, I like Pac-Nor. For the quality you get for the price you get it at, Pac-Nor is extremely hard to beat.

Alot of the guys here like pacnor. I just went with a Sharp Shooter Supply barrel, its a douglas, and like it. Sharp Shooter Supply now offers a brux which is what I would order next or a shilen. I am not sure if you know many of the drop in barrel makers so here we go, Lothar Walther, Mcgowan, Douglas and Brux both through sharp shooter supply, shilen, pacnor, and ER Shaw. I would order any of those barrels very quickly except the shaw. I think you need to some homework on the shaw, to understand what youre getting into.

chef - just curious what the difference would be between a Shaw and any of the other replacement barrels. What is meant by "I think you need to some homework on the shaw, to understand what youre getting into."???

I'll answer in Chef's absence. Shaw barrels are generally viewed as be a cut below the other barrel makers mentioned above.

Shaws are fine for hunting rifles, just don't expect 1/2" or less groups. Some of their barrels may shoot that well, but the odds are better, if you go with one of the other manufactures.

My experience with a Shaw barrel. I purchased a light weight sporter chamberred in 6x47mm (222 Rem Mag based)and rechamberred it to 6mm/204 Ruger. It is a very nice barrel, shoots well and cleans easy. I have a couple of Pac-Nor's a 6x45mm 3 groove and a 25/204 Ruger 5 groove. The Shaw shoots as well as the 5groove but not the 3 groove. We're talking 3/4" vs. 1/2".

At a hundred plus dollars difference you have to decide if it's worth buying a Pac-Nor or a Shaw. Both companies have been great to work with. If I were going to build a super precision rig I'd think about a premium barrel. For a predator or big game gun a Shaw would be just the ticket.

That said I'm thinking about a 20" heavy varmint barrel in 222 Rem for my Savage and am thinking I'm goin to try a Shaw.

A little bit extra, I picked up a Adams & Bennett 250 Savage barrel for a build and had it shortenned to 20" for a little carbine. When we cut it the bore was slightly off center but still shoots very well with Horn 117 RN's.

I dont own a shaw, but I didnot comment negatively on shaw barrels. I think at some point I will get a shaw barrel myself. My comment was based more toward understanding what youre buying. If you want a target barrel go with another company. Shaw barrels are good hunting barrels from what I hear, but as previously stated I do not own a shaw barrel, but am not opposed to owning one. I hope this clarifies my previous post.
