Savage M112 Varmint

I've got one. Had it for about 15 years now. That's what I'm holding in my avatar. One of my most favorite varmint rigs.

Is the 112 Varmint is the old long action varmint rifle with a mag block for shorter 223 and 22-250 rounds?

In the 1980's I shot a 110S, a long action 308 with a heavy barrel for Metalic Silhouettes, it was very accurate off the bench and accurate enough to knock over coyote sized rams at 550 yard offhand on a regular basis with an old Lyman American 10x.

Sorry, I did not see your question right away!

It shot so-so to start off with. After I spent a few days running patches saturated with JB paste it began to give me some fine groups. Really fine in fact. Five into one hole that could be covered with less than a dime at 100 yards. 26 grains of Varget and a 50 grain Vmax did that. And that was with the gawdawful factory trigger and a $100 Bushnell scope mounted on it. Later with a better trigger and (much) better scope I went on to kill a bajillion ground squirrels with it and lots of prairie dogs as well.

Several years ago I made it into a .223 AI and have been having even more fun with it. It has been a most charming gun. It has treated me so well the idea of ever parting with it is simply absurd.

I have several Savage model 12s ,short action model. Here is a M 112 that I re -barreled from 22/250 to 17machIV.. This is a single shot model with no magazine cut out in the action...This rifle also has a replacement Rifle Basix trigger installed. With a load of 18.2 Grs of H 322 powder,Remington 7 1/2 benchrest primers and 25 gr Berger match bullets,it shoots 3/8 to 1/2 inch groups consistently..

Hey EB, bet ya could cut those groups down to 1/4" if ya'd flip that rifle over.

My first Savage was one of those. Most accurate rifle I owned at the time. Can't say that now, cause I have several Savages. However, check the barrel and throat. Some of those guys shoot a lot. A 22-250 will eat a barrel pretty quick.

Anybody who owns/owned one of these in .22-250 or Swift happen to know the barrel twist rate? Have heard the Varmint models were always @ 1:14" and never went to the 12.

Not sure about the M112, but the 12 VLP in .22-250 is 1:12. But
mine will not stabilize 60gr bullets, doesn't like 55's much,
yet is a 1/4" rifle with 50's....go figure.

Interesting; thanks. I was wanting the 1:12, hoping it would stabilize and shoot accurately the 53 or 60 grain V-Max and preferably through one of those 112 .220 Swifts (found one reasonably priced, but don't know the rate.)
Maybe I'll just get a Cabela's 12FV in .22-250 for now, and if it won't shoot either of those above bullets very well I won't be out that much $. Can always screw on a different barrel in a different chambering or twist later.
