savage model 11 in 243

dog driller

need a little help. been wanting for yotes and a little deer hunting and also kids coming along a 243. a dealer had very lightly used savage w/ 3-9/32 simmons. i could not resist so i picked it up. this gun is blued with synthetic. dbm, no accutrigger. i have trouble trying to figure out what savage models evolved from what and what they have become. can anybody straighten me out? also how old it might be? this site is very helpful and i tried looking back through old posts and could not figure it out. never had a savage rifle but guys around here that have them like them and their are plenty of you on here that like them. i thought i would give it a shot -- it feels pretty good -- have not shot it and won't get a chance for a while. but i can't wait to try it. is the twist 1:9.25 ? also i do not load and would like to use factory one high wgt. ammo for all shooting any suggestions -- was thinking hornady or winchester. and i do not save fur. thanks for any info.

Without the accu-trigger it may be a "package" model 11, they are a great rifle and shoot very good. The trigger may be a little heavy for you but would be good as is for the kids.

That trigger is adjustable and i have mine breaking right at 2.75 lbs, way to light for kids. I shoot 87gr vmaxs and they will make a clover leaf at 100yds when i'm up to it, have fun with it and go to savageshooters.com for all things savage. blue

Savage dbm, M11 is one of the newer styles, year made depends on serial #.
The twist you have will shoot anything from the 55g to 100g loads with no problem. If you want 1 load look at the 100g jsp loadings.
No accutrigger makes it the standard M11, it is adjustable also.

If you are wanting to shoot factory invest the money in one box each of everything available to you. You will be amazed at the difference between what your rifle likes and the ones it doesn't. I've had Sako .243's that wouldn't hold under one and a half inches with some, an inch with others, but the cartridge they liked would shoot a cloverleaf. The person who tries one or two types and isn't impressed may have a tack driver and not know it.

Federal premium or match seems to be one of the universally great .243 factory loads for whatever I've tried it in. One Sako Varmint I had liked Winchester 55's.

Invest the money on four or five, try to get Federals, you'll be amazed at how much better the one your rifle likes will shoot.

I recently got a semi heavy barrel Winchester model 70 .243 WSSM, the heavy bullets won't group under two inches which is not even close to acceptable to me, but the 55's will do half an inch or under.

Good luck.

thank you for the info. when i do get a chance to shoot it i will get some federal, and few other brands in heavier weight and try it out. i sure hope it likes the heavier pill. i don't want to have a bunch of different weights for different situations -- hard on the wallet.
i did that for my 270 deer gun -- loves 140/150 -- got a box of 100gr. figuring it would work better for coyotes -- wrong -- i learned the hard way. after that i found this site as i was getting more into yote hunting -- I learned a bunch -- thanks -- this is a great site for info.
after i shoot the savage a little i may do something with the trigger-- we will see.
