Looking at an older savage model 110 243. any experience with these? from what I have read these are pretty good shooters. I know they are heavier with the wood stock but for what I want it for it will be perfect. Looked on gunbroker for prices and they were in the 300 plus range -- the one I am looking at is a little less $$----- good or bad? -- thanks in advance.

Depending on its age it could be a long action or short action. Early on Savage built a short action that was also called a 110. Later Savage put short action cartridges into a long action and put a spacer in the mag well for feeding purposes and on the bolt to reduce the distance of the bolt throw. Most likely this is one of the long action Savages. They are great shooters. The trigger may have two or three screws with the three screw trigger being better. It has a screw for setting the sear engagement and can get a 3# hunting trigger easily. It can also go to 2.5# as a varminter with a spring change.

I had one in .223 and regret selling it.

I would shoot crab apples off barb wire fences @ 100 yards, shoot the 6 penny nail heads holding up my targets.

If I could see it, I could shoot it.

Heavy, but solid, and it was balanced well.
My 2 cents

It's hard to go wrong with a used Savage. Especially for under $300. Each one I've had has been a shooter no matter the caliber or whether it had a wood or synthetic stock.

Id snag it fast if under $300. If it turns out to have a bad barrel they can be had for $80-$100 from those selling their old barrels or a new bbl for $200 on up.
