any of you know how is the barrel attached to the receiver on a model 25? i read something about it being pinned to the receiver. is it threaded and then pinned? anybody know? thanks.

Think you will find a set screw in the hole that the recoil lug used for the screw for the front of the action mount in the stock. It is not pinned and it is threaded. Larry

let me try the question another way. can the barrel be removed and reinstalled on a m25? like be removed to be threaded for asuppressor and then reinstalled.

My smith installs breaks on my rifles with out removing them. I would think threading for a suppressor wouldn't be any different.

All of my stuff has been threaded installed in the action. With how long that barrel is, there shouldn't be a need to take it out

They are not pinned. The barrel is threaded, the shank of the barrel goes up into the front of the action, sort of like a sleeve, there is no shoulder on the barrel. Under the front action screw, in the hole it goes into, you will find a set screw that locks the barrel in place. Take that out and then unscrew the barrel. Larry

no set screw under the action screw on this model 25.

smith says no problem to thread barrel while on the action. so good to go.

thanks to everybody.

I am glad you got the job done, on the one I had apart, in the front stud that is attached to the action there was a set screw in the bottom of it. The barrel is threaded about 2 inches worth with a section turned down for the set screw to hit so it doesn't mess up the threads. Granted this was on a rifle made a couple of years ago, still, I would look very carefully in the bottom of that stud. Larry

when savage first designed the m25 maybe they tried a couple of different ways of making the barrel to receiver connection? that would not surprise me at all. this is a brand new rifle right out of the box. but i have no idea when it was manufactured. may of been made 12 years ago.

btw, it is a .204.

this is what i know about the one i have. that round front stud (savage would probably call it a recoil lug on a model 25 ?) does screw into the receiver. if you screw that out of the receiver you do see threads in the bottom of the hole. not sure if they are barrel threads or the threads of a sleeve threaded into the receiver and the barrel is pressed into the sleeve.

that front stud stops against those threads. those threads are very jacked up from that stud being screwed up against them. i do know you would have a real mess if you tried unscrewing those jacked up threads out of the receiver.

i will ask the smith more about the barrel to receiver connection when i pick it up. will also take a picture or 2.

Sounds like they still use the front lug to lock the barrel in place, they just use the lug screwed into the action instead of a separate set screw. Likely the threads would be able to unscrew with a little anitsieze or lube and some work. Good to hear that it is close to the same as I remembered. Larry
