Well I was thinking I would add a 17 Hornet to the inventory and was giving some thought to the Savage 25. I would like to know how you like them and if you think they meet your expectations. Would you buy the Model 25 again or go with something else.

Coyotes will be the main target but squirrels , and other small varmints will also likely be on the list.

I really like mine in the laminate stock. Very accurate, smooth bolt, lighterish, short bolt throw. One of the negatives is its a press fit barrel so when its done its done.

Some guys will complain about the action design not being strong enough, not this guy. It has lugs just like any high power bolt action.

I had a model 25 in 17 hornet and would not get one again. It fed poorly and was always snagging/catching rounds when cycling from the clip. The only rounds that fed some of the time were the vmax with polymer tip. I tried handloading some hollow-points but they wouldn't feed at all, they just got hung up and damaged. So then I thought I could single-feed rounds, but the way it was designed that was nearly impossible. You just couldn't physically get your fingers in the opening and you had to shake the bullet around hoping it would find the chamber eventually. And finally, the rifle never shot well at all for me. Mine shot 2+ inch groups at 100 yards, and the groups would move around impact point randomly. All that said, I'm not a Savage hater. My favorite rifle of all is my Savage Model 40 in 22 Hornet. That rifle has been flawless in performance and shoots dime-size groups at 100. It, along with my Savage model 93 in 17HMR, are my go-to rifles for ground squirrel shooting.

i have a m25 in 17 hornet. mine is the black syn stock/blue barrel model. real happy with it. factory hornady 20gr vmax will shoot 5 shots in an inch every time i shoot it at paper. hand loads do much better.

my m25 feeds the vmax out of the mag just fine. just got a box of the new hornady 25gr hollow point rounds. have not shot any yet, but cycled numerous full mags through the gun and they feed even better than the vmax. hoping they are accurate out of my rifle.

I had the 17 Hornet with a heavy barrel and the laminate thumbhole stock. My best bud fell in love with it so I traded it to him. The only problem either of us had was it dearly love the 17 grain bullet and you can't buy anything other that factory loads. Hornady doesn't sell the the 17 grain in just the bullets for reloading. The rifle was accurate and function just fine and really fun to shoot.

did not know anybody was loading a 17gr bullet in 17 hornet cases. is this a hornady offering?

I had the same exact experience with my 25 Savage as WeaselCircus did. Stay away. If you must have a .17 Hornet (I didn't care for it, frankly), at least get in in a C-Z 527 - preferably a Varmint model.

I would look real close at the rear action screw where it goes through the trigger guard. I didn't notice the plastic was cracked until I took it apart to clean it. Rather than send it to Savage or buy a new one I bought a stainless Axis trigger guard from Boyd's. Cut the trigger guard off the mag well, took a soldering iron and custom fit the guard up towards the center screw. Lol Screwed on real nice. The stainless is solid and kinda sets it off. Accuracy is 2nd to none but would I buy another one? NO.

I have a 25 Walking Varminter Synthetic in 17HH. It took about 50 rounds to work itself into accuracy and function. Love it. Would buy another.
