I stopped at the farm and put a few rounds through my old Savage 40 22 HORNET. I hadn't had it out in several years. It was a perfect day and the old Hornet was shootin like it did the last time it was out . It was turning 1" groups at 130 yards with some old Win factory ammo i had. My home made ammo does a little better but i didn't have any. Any Savage 40 uses out there these days.

Had two and still have one. Both shot nice groups under an inch at 100 yards. I have a cheap Tasco 6-24 on it. It’s my only accutrgger and I like it. I’m shooting 35 and 40 v max over 13 gr of Lil Gun. Really pulverizes Starlings at my friends farm-cut one Pigeon in half at 50yds. Liked my other one also but lost it when a friend passed away while he was using it and never saw it again....Im giving the other to my nephew so down to three Rugers now. They shoot the same in fact all five shot that same load accurately.

"The old Hornet" are you talking about one of the newer Savage Model 40 single shots or older Savage/Stevens 340's. I shot a Sav 23 in 22H along time ago, it was quite the little fox rig. You know Sav made a Model 40 in 30-06 also.

It sounds like a nice shooter. I just gave my niece a Sav 219 in 22H for her first predator hunting rifle, she lives up in western WI back in the forests. It was a very good shooter also.

I've been looking for a 22H but something always comes up and I have to put it on hold, do have a 218 Bee so it isn't a need to have one thing.

Yep, my model 40 single shot is one of the most accurate Hornets I've ever owned. I have shot 3/8" 100 yd groups with 35 gr V-maxes & H110 hand loads.

I had one and traded it for a CZ 527, can't say it was a good move. Twist in the CZ is wrong, forget shooting anything but a Hornet bullet (short).
I had a nice cast bullet load worked up for the Savage, key holes in the CZ at 30 yards.

Treerat-. I have shot 3/8" 100 yd groups with 35 gr V-maxes & H110 hand loads. [/quote said:
I use the same bullets and powder in my hornet but it's in a TC Encore. The best coon and cat gun I've every had.

Got so wound up last week I started loading some shells . I am going with a Speer 45 gr soft point , Remington 5 1/2 primers , 12.9 grs of lil-gun . I haven't really tried these in this Hornet but I have shot several hundred 50 gr Dog Towns with the same charge/primer under them .
