I have been lookingh to buy a model 16fhss 243 savage. the other day when i was looking at the local gun shop the guy working started trying to get me to look at a howa. i had never heard of them and was wondering if they are a good gun, they sure are nice lookin /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. do they shoot as good as a savage outa the box???? it will be for yote hunting, bench shooting and a back up deer rifle

if you had your choice would you buy a 243 savage or howa.

Howa is made by the same company as weatherby in Japan. They are good quality guns. My next door neighbor had one recently that shot ok, but not near as tight as his savages. A mutual friend now has it and my buddy has 2 more savages that shoot little tiny holes.

Howa may have the edge for appearance, but if you want the best chance at cloverleaves, Savage would likely be the choice.

With a stock barrel, this may not be as important, but I have both Savage 110 and Howa 1500, and the Howa action is flat bottomed [ better].

You can make a round bottom into a flat botttom with a sleeve, this is how they accurzie Rem 700 actions.
But that is a big hasle and cost.

I have had many savages and they all shot outstanding. Don't know why but I am buying my first howa tomorrow. I just love the look and feel of the varmint supreme. I'm not expecting it to shoot as well as my savages, but will be very happy if it will come close.

I also have had one of each. the savage 110
and the howa 1500, both nice guns but the howa
was definately more accurate

I have and currently do own several of each and despite their lack of cosmetic appeal the Savage is by far the superior rifle in capable hands. And with the Savage, you can play with the headspace a little with the barrel nut (along with your loads) to really crank the most out of the rifle. Savage may not be the prettiest girl at the party, but man can she dance. You can't go wrong with either, but having fired thousands of rounds through both, Savage is the more "accurate".

I agree, Savage is by far going to be on average the more accurate rifle. I had (Savage 110E in .223) and sold one that I would put up against any BR gun any day of the week. It is the most accurate rifle that I have ever seen. I wish I still had the target that I shot my first handload for accuracy into, looked like one hole (but if you examined the target real close you could just barely see the clover leafing made by the other projectiles. Load was 26.3 gr. BLC-2, Seirra 55 gr. Blitz and CCI 450 mag. primer. Bullet was seated for the base of the bullet to be even with the bottom of the neck @ the shoulder line.

Howa, is a nice looking gun and I almost bought one of their barreled actions....JOHN

howa thumbhole varminter 22-250 was the worst shooting biggest mistake i ever made. it felt better than any gun i ever had in my hands. that is why i bought it. too bad it wouldnt shoot better than 1.5inch 100 yd groups. i sent it back and 2 months later when it came back it shot no better so i traded it off. i got a savage that i will bet damn good money with against any howa if you wanna dance.

je4bowhuntin,

I have A Savage 16, and a Howa 1500. I bought the Savage,
and I won the Howa. The Savage, in .22-250, is VERY
accurate, and not too fussy. Right now, the current pet
load for it, is a 50 gr. VMax bullet, over H-380, and the
groups were averaging .4 MOA, with a number of them
at .3 MOA. The Howa, in 300 WSM, is a little more fussy, but I
now have fired a few .6 MOA groups with it, when I finally
understood what it wanted in loads, with the bullets I was
using.

I have heard of more Howas being fussy, than I have Savages,
but a majority of Howas shoot well. I personally would
buy another Savage 16, before I would buy a Howa.

wich 16 do you have? i am thinking on getting the one with the new drop plate magazine or the one with the muzzle break (the one with the muzzle break looks tuff). i was really wanting the one with the removable clip but i cannot find one to look at in person around here and i am scared it wont look as smooth as the trap door model.
