Savage package rifles. ok or not?

Anyone have experience with the savage pkg rifles? The ones which come with scope/rings/bases? I am thinking a .223 to use for fox, an alternative to my swift to save the fur.

Buy a Stevens 200 in 223 and put a quality scope on it yourself.
Most package deals have a ultra-cheap optic on top.

I got a savage package rifle for christmas, it was 354$. The rifle itself is good, i really like the accu-trigger, but the action is so long that the rings are a really tight fit on the scope that comes on it. Being that it was my first rifle with scope ( the other is a .22 ) i broke the screw on the mount the first day because i tightened it too much. My rifle is chambered for .270 winchester, and so far i like it.
My only other complaint is that the screw that is on the bottom of the stock, ( about where you hold the rifle with your front hand ) came loose after about 20 rounds, making the barrel loose, but you can fix that with a little locktite.
-By the way i got mine from walmart, and make sure you tighten all the screws before you sight it in

I agree that the stevens 200 is a heck of a little gun.The only thing i like better about the savage rifles is the accutrigger. They dont come with the greatest scopes but they are good enough for hunting.Either of thease guns will serve you well.

i agree with clayman...the combo deal is a marketing thing in my opinion...your out the door for x amount of dollar's...i hear guy's say "yeah but it come's with a scope" well not all scope's are created equal...i think your question is a good one...bottom line buy whatever your choice of rifle & get a decent scope...they are seperate issue's...

I had the same experience with my 30-06 package 10 years ago. I see they haven't corrected that problem yet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gifBut on the other hand, everything is tight on the Super Varminter 12BGTV I just got in 22-250. Maybe that's where the extra cost comes in, paying somebody to put a little extra oomph into tightening the stock onto the recieiver. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My hunting partner bought one last year just before hunting season. The scope was really a low dollar Simmons and he replaced it with a Burris. The Simmons went on a 22 rifle so it wasn't a loss.

One thing for sure on any rifle you buy new or used. Dissemble, clean, re-oil and assemble making sure all the screws are tight. On most rifles I suggest dissembling the bolt and degreasing it and re-oiling it with a low temp oil.

One thing mentioned about the Savages with the long action is the scope ring spacing. It is really long and short barreled scopes can be hard to fit.

My partner is happy with the 7mm Rem mag he bought and he likes the accu-trigger. He could have gotten by with the low budget scope, but had the funds for a better one.

This gun shoots acceptable groups in the one inch range and plenty good for a deer/elk rifle. It looks like a pretty good bargain and the scope can be used that comes on it.

If you need to move the scope for more or less eye relief on the long action Savages your going to have to get some offset rings. We went thru three ring and base sets before we founs the right combination.

By all means if you get the package gun replace the rings. They are made of a very flimsy almost plastic feeling substance. You can get by with the scope, but the rings are very cheap. BTW, the gun is worth the price without the scope, they shoot very well. Another way to go is get the Stevens 200 and a Timmney trigger from Midway, you would have about the same money invested, with a very nice trigger. I have gone the Stevens route, and the package gun route. You can't go wrong either way.

My brother-in-law bought a 270 package gun last year after I suggested it as a first rifle. Same thing happened to him. Went hunting one day and noticed the barrel felt loose. He checked the rifle and the front action screw was missing! Knucklehead wrapped his sling around the barrel and stock to tighten it up and killed a doe that afternoon. Stranger things have happened.

I bought the Savage 10 GXP3 in .223 last fall. It is VERY accurate...sub MOA. Like others have said, the optics are cheap but will get you by. I have other scopes I could change it with but am shooting it the way it is. Don't feel like sighting it in 'cause when I go to the range I'm playing with my AR's.

I have two of them, .223, rem 7mm. (the speer 115gr in 7mm works good for long range) I called simmons about the scopes and they said there was'nt any caliber restrictions, and if i broke one just send it back and they would upgrade it. I did replace both scopes because i couldn't pull them back far enough to get the eye relief i needed, and yes they work great on other rifles. I used leopold rifleman see-thru rings #55880, with bushnell banner 6x18x50 scopes, they work fine and you can do rings and scope at wally world for about $150.00. blue
