Savage question

Picked up a Savage today. Its the older single shot version, I think. Is it a "J" model action. I can't remember.

Went to Savage and looked up the serial number. It brings up a parts schematic for a BVSS-S, 22-250, but no date of manufacture. Also shows it to be a repeater with sights on the barrel. I'm pretty sure this is not the factory barrel, but is a Savage barrel. Its stainless, fluted and a heavy barrel. The action is blue and most diffintely a single shot. Guess it really doesn't matter, it is what it is.

More research- Stock is a brown Laminate with black tip on the fore-end with a bolt spacing of 4.250. Action ejection port is 3.046ish and the action measures 1.345 in front of the recoil lug. I'm starting to think its not a Model J action. If not though what is it?????? Need a little help here fella's.

Large action? Small action? Anyone want to just guess?? I'm stumped! But I don't think its a J series anymore.

I have a 22250 model 12bvss that is prolly the same as yours other than being a repeater. What specificalky are you wanting to know about them?

Savage actions are often used for custom builds. Sounds like someone customized the original rifle including converting it to single shot. They've swapped out the barrel and put a new stock on to accommodate the larger barrel.

This is a single shot action for sure. The action has a solid bottom. Im just trying to figure out what I have. Large action or small. The solid bottom single shot action has me stumped.

Called Savage and the best I could tell from the conversation with the lady on the phone, its a BVSS-S. It came from the factory as a special ordered single shot rifle. Still a bit confused as to what I really have. A blued action with a stainless barrel??????

Tim- extremely good deal. At first look, I thought it was the older J series. After getting it home I soon realized it wasn't. Main reason for the questions is just knowing what I'm working with.
I also didn't know they made this rifle in single shot. Thought it only came in the target actions.

Thought I knew Savages pretty well. Looks like I'm in a learning mode on this one. Spent the day looking for a new base for my scope, as the Davidson bases and Kelby rings that came on it are killing my windage and elevation. Looked for a Leupold or Burris with adjustable windage and found out that a long action and short action one piece base will not work. Had to order a two piece from Mr. Potterfield.

rsbenden- Its a 22-250. I tried a Loopy one piece short and long action base and neither would work, Has me a little confused. Even being a short action caliber, its a long action???

I recently experience the same issue, however after some research I found that the rear mount is to be reversed when installed. I installed the Leupold 2 piece mounts on my Savage Model 10 Predator. If you go to the Leupold web site and search you will find a u-tube showing installation of the two piece mount and they have the windage screws close to the bolt opening. Also if you read the instructions it states the mounts are made to reverse if needed. After installation, the windage screws stick out over the bolt spending but do not interfere with loading or ejection. No fond of the looks, but they work. On the Savage Model 10 the bolt could not operate installing the traditional way.
