I love hunting with my .243 winny, however deer and bear season are the same time where I live so I have did a lot of research and narrowed a new round choice to a 260rem, 6.5x284, or a 25-06 because I want to shoot to 300 yards as flat as my .243 and use a big enough well designed round to kill a bear also and I hate recoil, im really sensitive to it. I decided on a 25-06 with 115 gr. barnes tsx rounds cuz I didnt want the trouble of trying to find ammo since I cant find any primers to load my own right now lol. Is the cheap sporter weight savage rifle in 2506 I believe, the modle 110 or 111 a accurate one or would I be better off gettin one in a good old remington modle 700 sps which also has a cheap garbage stock, I am a remington fan I owned one modle 111 savage in 7mm rem mag and it was totally garbage, 1.5" - 2" groups at 100 yrds thats junk. I sold that rifle, I think it was the cheap stock mostly and I havent yet learned how to bed an action. any oppinions on this would help me choose, I was also looking at a rugar modle 77 I believe that looked alright.

Billygoat, I belive that you can't go wrong with either Savage or Remington, but if you are having issues with recoil on 7mm mag - I would encourage that you possibly take a look at the 280 Rem or 280 AI for taking bear - they avg within 200fps of 7mm mag. The 284 bullet selection is better than the 25-06 and IMO you should be using a larger bullet then 115 gr for taking a bear.

Billygoat...good thinkin on bullet choice...ur black bears run around..what-300 to 400lbs?...25/06 will do the job...even up to tule elk...bullet placement & construction are key...easy on recoil...also,checkout the Marlin XL7...kevlars has a thread about a XL7 in 25/06 run'n rite now in the reloading forum....send him a private msg to get his opinion on Marlin's new bolt action.

As we speak there's a new Tikka T3 Lite in .25-06 on Gunbroker for $495. There's also a 6.5x55 Swedish for $570.
There's also a 7mm-08 for $559.

Well based on his past experience with Savage, it may not be the gun for him.

Spend a little more money and get a better rifle.

Good choice on the 25-06. It will smack black bears at 300 yards. I've killed 4 of them with mine from 375-600 with no problems. Average size blackies aren't any harder to kill then a decent buck.

This is my first post so take it for what it's worth, but I recently picked up a Howa 1500 in 25-06 that's a heck of a shooter right from the box. Scoped with a Meuller 6-15x50 in the factory Hogue stock is giving me MOA at 100yds, and I'm no great shot. Rifle itself was right around $475.

Just ordered a savage 116fcss weather warrior with the accustock in 25-06. Can't wait, should be here in a week. If it's not a savage or a tikka it's not in my safe.

I just posted this on another thread. I bought a savage 25-06 and that thing would shoot 1/2" groups with factory ammo right out of the box. My Ex-wife now owns the gun and I sure miss it.

In factory ammo I'm a big fan of Federal vital shok with Barnes TSX 100g. A bit spendy at $45-48/box but is a real solid round for me.

I bought a Stevens 200 in .25-06 for $299 and it shot under 1" at 100 right out of the box with factory 100gr Remington Core Lokts. I have not regretted this purchase at all. I have got it down to a group size of .679" at 100 yards with my handloads. I would recommend that rifle to anyone.

We were shooting 115gr partitions by federal. I beleive we also shot the 100gr Core-locks also but they tore up too much meat.

I am going to buy a Savage in 25-06 because of their reputation for accuracy. I now own a Ruger Varmint rifle in 25-06 and it is an excellent rifle too. It has a 26" barrel.

Recoil feels about like my 30-06 to me and the muzzle blast is horrendous even with that 26" barrel but I am still going to get one with a lighter barrel and stock.

I don't know if that kind of recoil will bother you but if there is any question about it, I would want to try one before buying.

I got a Weatherby Vanguard 26-06 about a year ago. I decided it would be my heavy bullet 25 caliber rifle, so all I've been shooting in it are 115's to 120 grain bullets.
Powders that are working good are, H-4831SC, RL-22 and 7828.
Good luck with yours!
