Savage short action for .257 Roberts

I am pondering on building a .257 Roberts on a Savage Stevens action. Is it possible to use a short action Stevens for this chambering?

The long action looks awfully long and the .257 Roberts does not look as long as a 30-06 shell.

The newer short actions might be to short but the older
short action (j-action) just might work as they were just a tad longer. To find one of the older J-actions you will have to focas of the used rifle market.

I just re-barreled a few year old Savage Model 16(SA),
with a 6mm Remington chambered barrel. Which is basically
the 7x57 Mauser necked down to 6mm, and the .257 Roberts,
is the same 7x57 Mauser necked down to .257 cal. I am
shooting bullets under 90 grains, and I have had no issues
with the COL on my loads, not fitting in the SA Savage.
There may be problems with the longer bullets, in 115-120
grain, in the .25 cal, but for the 6mm Remington, the
SA works fine. I do not have a long throated 6mm chamber,
so I can even get to the lands, on this barrel, and still
fit the loads in the magazine.
