This was the gun ( Savage/Springfield Model 840, .222 cal, Springfield 4x scope) my Grandfather used to keep coyotes off his stock when he used to ranch. He didn't do much for pleasure but ocasionally he would go calling with the old Scotch call in the pic.

I've just begun to get back into the sport and thought it would be fitting to use his rifle to get started with. I pulled a grey fox double the last week of Feb. with this rifle and a syco tweety.

I've got a black rifle on order but for now this setup works fine.

trash, that is a fine looking little setup you got there, but then again, I am partial to Savages. I have an old .222 Rem. in a model 722. That ol' 222 is a nice caliber. The history behind your rifle makes it worth more to you than anyone else on earth, enjoy it fully. 99

That looks alot like a Stevens 325 or one of the Savage 340's. I have a late 50's circa Savage 340C in .222 much like that one and it is a killing machine. I dont care what people say about Savages, the older ones are solid well built rifles.

My first center fire rifle was a Savage 340 exactly as you have pictured. This was 50 years ago. weaver 10 power affixed. I gave $65.00 of hard earned farm work and lawn mowing money for that gun. As accurate as I needed in those days. Have records of 89 groundhogs that bit the dust with that gun. Only drawback was the 10 lb. trigger and side mount scope. Wish I still had that gun. Traded it in on two 722 remingtons in 1960. Both .222 Remington Cal. Still have both of these guns. Shot thousands of rounds through these. They still shoot as good today as when new. My advice, keep that 840 in the family. Dennis

Hi Jack. Thanks for the welcome, but i've been here before. Got logged out somehow around a month ago under a slightly different moniker and could'nt log back on, so i finally said the hell with it and re-registered Went to buy some sling swivels today, got lucky and ran into a Sav mod 340 30-30 that an old man had just brought into trade along with some sporterized Mausers. Ten minutes and $200 later it was in my truck going home with me. Really nice shape, a few dingers in the furniture but nothing major and a sweet looking bore and crown. One very tight nice old shooter. The old guy said he got it in the 40's but i'm not too sure on that as i dont think they were made then, but i could be wrong? Clayman. Do you know when Savage introduced the 340's? I have looked online to no avail and theres no serial#'s on either one of my guns to try that route.

I have a Springfield (Savage) Model 840 in 30-30. It was my first rifle. My dad got it for me for my 8th grade "graduation". It set him back $75.00 and I got a scope for my birthday. I used this gun to kill my first several deer and my first hog. I have not shot it in a while, but I still have it.

I looked at a Steven .222 a couple of weeks ago at a pawn shop, but couldn't remember the model #. I had asked about it here, but got no replies. I think they wanted about $279 for it. They may still have it.

That seems strange. It is on the right side of the receiver on mine.
