Stevens with a Timney or cut the crap and get a Savage?
I like the Savage 12fv but sence I'm not going to be in the Corps for much longer I'll need to save as much money till I get a job and into school (but I have a budget for guns

) ... you know, all that fun stuff...
I'm looking for a varmint gun... anything from whistle pigs to them yote dogs and everything in between. I've got it whittled down to either the .223 or 22-250. I'll be reloading at some point for them too. Bullet selection would be the same as they are both use .224" bullets? Thats what I understand from my Lymans 49th edition... so probably leaning toward the 22-250 for the flat trajectory.
I guess with all that being said is a Stevens basically a Savage without the black stock and accu-trigger? I love a good trigger. (don't we all) Is everything else the same in them, barrel, action...?

Also, I'm pretty set on a Savage or Stevens... I don't want to get into a discussion on other guns...

Anyway, hope I gave you enough info on what I want out of my gun...

Either one will serve you well. The Stevens is the same action without the accutrigger. Both are very good rifles. Either the .223 or 22-250 will do a number on varmints, and ammo cost is pretty reasonable for both. Much cheaper still when you start reloading.

You can adjust the trigger on a Stevens in about 15 minute down to 3 pounds + or - a few ounces. Stevens is a great rifle.

I replaced the Stevens trigger with a tuned 3-screw trigger from a pre-Accutrigger Savage. The 3-screw triggers are getting hard to find these days though. A good gunsmith can tune a Stevens trigger for less than $50. My father-in-law paid $45 to get his done and it is crisp and light.

The 12 FV will be heavy. I have one in .204 and with the 26" Bull barrel its not alot of fun to carry if you do alot of walking. Just something to consider. Good luck.

A Stevens or a Savage .223 with standard barrel cut down to 18" or 20" makes for a dandy little carry rifle.
As would any other bolt rifle in same caliber.

Step 1: Buy a Stevens
Step 2: mod/replace trigger
Step 3: Make "pew pew" sound when shooting
Step 4: clean when accuracy falls off.
