Savage vs. Stevens

I know that Savage makes Stevens, but I have also heard that there really isn't much difference between the two except a couple hundred off the price tag for the Stevens.

What differences would a person really notice between a Stevens Model 200 to a basic Savage 11 series.

Savage Model 11 = $550
Stevens Mdl 200 = $336

That extra $200+ could really be put into a nice scope.

The savage I picked for a comparison is based off of looks and price.

The big difference is the Savage rifles all come with the new Accutrigger. I like it better than the old Savage trigger, but I still prefer a good Rem trigger that's tuned.

I can't say there's any other real difference, other than the Stevens stocks are grey and the Savage is black.

Stevens is the best bang for the buck.

The Stevens is awfully basic. Stevens trigger is not as good but will rival other discount house rifles. Frankly, a guy can buy a Stevens, have it camoed by Bell & Carlson, have it mounted with a mid-level scope (200.00) and end up with a pretty nice package for around $700. You could also spray paint a camo pattern on a Stevens and not feel guilty about it.

The trigger is workable.

I have 1 Savage & 3 Stevens.

That's my opinion on the added value of the Stevens. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I put a Rifle Basix Sav-1 trigger on my Stevens 30.06 for $64 and 30 minutes of my time.

I bought another Stevens yesterday in .223 and found a Pentax scope on sale for $80. Sweet!

well the trigger isnt perfect but with a little tweaking you can make it good
the stock is cheap rough edges an such but its a hunting rifle
so...

Accutirgger is the only difference. In fact I took mine out this morning in preperation for a filmed hunt I am going to go on this weekend and it is still very impressive how well the stevens shoots. It is 4 years old now and easily has seen 1300-1500 rounds down the tube and is still going real strong. At 200 yards with just a bipod in a hunting situation I shot a 2.5 inch groups of 4 rounds and then nailed a half of a clay pigeon with the fifth shot. Buy it you will not regret it. The Stevens trigger can be lowered to 3lbs of pressure with one simple screw. The accutrigger is not really needed unless you need a varmint rifle then it may have a slight edge.

Crowpopper....

That snow camo is downright scary!
If that photo gets around the web too much, I suspect you'll get a casting call audition for a horror movie before Halloween. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

All in good fun... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you buy the Stevens and it shoots good and just take it out and shoot it your ahead. If you buy it with the idea of a new stock and trigger then you may be better off getting the Savage of your choice.

Both offer the ability to interchange barrels with nothing more than a barrel nut wrench, barrel vice and a go headspace gauge for the caliber your changing to.
