Savage

Just setting here waiting on the sheetrock guy to show up and thought I'd give the Savage website a look. There were 7 pages of centerfire rifles and 94 different models. Granted most of the differences were in the barrel, stocks and colors but seems like everyone of them had a different set of letters in the model. Axis, Axis Pro, Axis XP just a very short example. No wonder its so hard to figure out what you have. LOL, who names all these rifles? And that's not counting the rimfires.

I agree, most Savages are pretty out of the box accurate. And it seems every year they get better but they also get more expensive. A friend has two with the carbon fiber barrels and they are both excellent rifles. Who'd have ever though a Savage would cost $2000? But they have them.

Very very true.
Then leads to actually measuring when the desire for re-stocking or other modifications such as magazines comes. Although some will clam a certain rule such as all XXX are this the same as YYZ. Usually, followed with exceptions, which leads right back to measuring. Frustrating for a novice, at first.
The secret of a affordable accurate rifle out of the box is out. Now we see a gain in popularity, with price point increasing. Not necessarily a bad thing.
Just a thought

Just went through this with a Savage Axis action I'm looking at re-barreling. I had to make two calls on that action.
Seems the action is a long action BUT is caliber specific, so in my case the axis I have is actually a long action in length but because it was originally in the .308 family it is a short action because of cartridge.
OK, that one I had to verify with MDT for re-stocking purposes (Field Stock Chassis, did find out that MDT supplies the recoil lug and screws with the stock).

Honestly thinking about it from a manufacturer standpoint it's a smart move less tooling keeping cost down.

The next call was with Savage to date the action. Why? Scope mounts /bases, after /on 2021 the screw size was changed. I happened to have the older version 6-40 if I recall correctly 8-40 for after the change.
