SCAT!

Hey, I am about to show my ignorance here...
I was out with a buddy the other day looking for predator sign. We found several tracks in the few remaining puddles along a road (very little rain in the past month). I found several old pieces of scat that were full of hair, so I know they were from predators of some sort. There was a lot of scat with persimmon seeds, which I have always assumed was from raccoons and possums. I don't mean to be gross, but some of those things were so big, if they were from a coon, either it was a constipated coon or bigger than I want to meet up with. Do coyotes eat persimmons too? (Don't laugh, I'm still learning.) Input appreciated.

Coyotes will eat just about anything. They eat a lot of Blackberries around here this time of year. They will eat just about any fruit or vege in season.

How about adding some info for us newbees. How often do they poop. Don't say "when they need to". When scouting, or when the Coyotes are marking their turf, how close together are they marking it, what types of locations, etc. Is it only poop, or do they also mark it by urinating, which we won't see?

Thanks.

Still waiting to get my first Coyote...Karl

Speaking of "bombing missions" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. All the yrs I've spotted coyotes. Up until last Winter, did I ever witness them doing a job[from what I re-call].

Last Winter, quite afew revealed themselve's to me from afar. Most were eyeing me @ the time. I felt so dirty /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I've seen them eat corn & soy beans around here.

It might also be Fox Scat. When the Persimmons are dropping they will eat as many as they can handle. When I was in GA, this time of year every pile of Fox Doo-doo had a load of persimmon seeds in it.

Persimmons are one of the main food sources around here for deer and coyotes,,,you won't hardly ever find coyote scat without persimmon seeds in it in this part of the country.

Coyotes will most definately eat persimmons.

Kirby, a funny story here. I was driving along a levee in the river bottoms several years ago to make a set up. I coyote ran across the levee and was quickly trying to put some distance between us, across a wide open field. I shut the truck down and bailed out with the rifle to take a freebie, if the shot presented itself. Just as My feet hit the dirt, he slammed on the breaks and hunched up to take a dump at about 150 yds away. I hit him through the shoulders as he was squatted. I have never figured that one out.

Thanks guys. I have found scat with persimmon seeds on the middle of a fallen log about 8 inches across (the log, not the scat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) that I would assume was from coons. Lately I have found the larger stuff with persimmons in the middle of roads (shale and dirt roads) on the de-activated military base where I plan to hunt. I know the coyotes are in the area. This spring, while getting to my turkey set-up I thought the dogs were going to have us for breakfast. Just before daylight one yelped then several others started in on the most awful ruccus you ever heard. Made me check to make sure there was a 3 inch number 5 in the chamber.

LOL, I had a yote do the exact same thing to me last year. Yep, I shot him mid grunt.

Hey Lightsout
Like coffee437 said, Its hard to find coyote scat with persimmons in it. Here in N.E. Oklahoma there is a ton of persimmons trees. They make good turkey pot calls to.

No kidding! I found some persimmon wood with some great curly figure a couple of years ago. The stuff warped like a dog's leg (no pun intended /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) as it dried. What I was able to salvage made some beautiful pot calls. They sounded as good as they looked.
