scent control (homemade or cheap)

The guy at the sports store said to use a basic scent killer spray (I use earth scent) and that it is also necesarry to use a cover scent and recommended a $10 bottle of skunk. Any better ideas? Or do I have to break down and buy an over-priced bottle of skunk? Also, how much of the dang stuff do you put on? Should I be able to smell myself? I'm not sure how the procedure goes. Thanks for the advice.

You can fool their eyes, you can fool their ears, but you will not fool their nose. I have used cover scents and scent reducing clothing and have never seen an increase in the number of coyotes called. Play the wind and call. If you wan't to make cheap scent reducer just add baking soda to hot water put in a spray bottle and spray down with that periotically. If you wan't cover scent use local aromatic plants( pine, juniper ect.)boil and put in a bottle. There you have scent reduction and cover scent for about 5 cents. Good luck,

Scott

Im with drscott on this one. Bathe in it, spray it, use it for mouth rinse, their still gonna smell ya. The idea of boiling natural plants sounds like a good one. I wonder if cactus will work? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Tommy, I know for a fact drinking the fermented juice of certain cacti can make you invisible and bulletproof, as well as slightly taller. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif  /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

As far as scent control, I use my Ruger .223. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif For some reason, it stops coyotes from smelling me.

Hey Redfrog "did you see the size of those chickens?" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So it's just not worth smelling like skunk piss? Sounds good to me. The only problem is that I've got to get them to come into BOW range without smelling me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I can shoot out OK to 60 yards most of the time, but further than that is hopeless.

Idaho, I didn't realize you were bow hunting.

Hunting from a tree stand....call and kill.

Hunting from the ground, .....One word ....Brad H caller and predator enticer decoy. OK it was more than one word. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you hunt with a bow, you already watch the wind. Make some noise, I mean real noise on the Brad H Antler call and they will come on the run. The decoy will give you a chance for the shot if you watch your set up.

And Tommy , Yes I seen them all, even the one with the harmonica. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Just make your own cover scent, it's easy. One big gut bomb microwave burrito the night before you go hunting, and another first thing in the morning before you head out. You'll be set for the day.

Although the wife will probably react more positively if you just squirted skunk scent on yourself.

if you are bow hunting the best thing that you can do (in my opinion) is to do your homework on your setup, you might consider setting up and forceing the dog to come in on the upwind side by using the landscape to your advantage you will not get as many shots this way but as with all bow hunting it is the challenge that counts not the quantity of kills, use a decoy andwhen you are about to give up DONT, keep your scent to a minimum especially your breath, breeth through nose and use clorets breath deodreant if you can find it.
