Scope Alignment Question

My friend has a rifle and just mounted a new scope on it. He is left handed and I am right handed. We had a dispute that he mounted his scope crooked. When I looked through it right handed it was really crooked. So, then I looked through it left handed and it looked straight? Thought this was odd so we put it in a vice so you wouldn't have to shoulder the rifle and looked from directly behind. Same result; left eye it was straight but with the right eye it was crooked. Can anyone tell me why this is? I mean besides the obvious of holding the rifle crooked which we eliminated by holding it in the vice.

Thanks

Did it do the same for Him? That is one of the strangest things I've run across. Just have no idea why that would happen.

Are the cross hairs truly plumb and level with the rifle action? Check this with a plumb line, large clear container of liquid, or laser level.

It would be interesting to put one of those $20 Level/Level/Level devices on it and see what is up. Pretty handy do-dad IMO.

I have a small level bubble, out of an old level, that I place on the top of the scope mounting rail and level the rifle and then place it on the top dust cap of the scope to level that...

While I've never tried your experiment from the left/right eye perspective, the only thing I can guesstimate about it is that the eye dominance is adjusted to the brain and is corrected through continual use...much like the muscle control/reflex for throwing a baseball between the right and left arm...awkward at first, but the more you practice, the more coordinated it becomes...and the earlier in life you start, the easier it is...

I had to train myself to shoot a handgun left handed and it's gotten easier over time....and I had to learn to bowl left handed due to an injury to my strong side hand when I was 20... But, I still can't throw a baseball with my weaker side.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I would mount it for the man shooting the rifle and if it straight for him, then i wouldn't worry about how it looks to his hunting buddy . Very few people look through a scope the same especially when one is left and the other right handed . A lot of cheap scope have the reticule mount crook to begin with.

I had never heard of that either. So I got a couple of my rifles out and gave it a look see. First off It is very difficult for me to mount the rifles to my left sholder, the eye relief just does not work out. However with much straining and stretching I was able to get a view through both of the scopes I tried. It looked just as level through both eyes and both scopes.

Just thought I would leave a comment.

But wow I wouldn't want to try shooting left handed with a scoped rifle.
