scope for .204

I am looking at getting a Rem VTR .204 and am trying to decide on a scope. What do you guys think of a Leupold VariX II 6x18x40?

The choice of scope depends on what your going to do with your gun. If your predator hunting then the 6 by 18 is probably to much scope. a 2 by 7 or 3 by 9 with a wide field of view is better for calling. You'll often get a close shot and it's pretty hard to get a high power narrow field of view scope on a 15 yard coyote.

I shoot a CZ 204 Varmint and I use two scopes. A wide field 3 by 9 goes on in the fall and winter for coyote hunting and in the spring an old Tasco target dot 8 by 32 goes on for ground squirrels and rock chucks.

Nothing wrong with using different scopes for different applications. If your a PD hunter then the higher power zooms are dandy and Leupold makes some fine scopes.

They are a little spendy but I'd really be taking a look at the new Bushnell 6500. The 2 X 16 would give you the best of all worlds low power for target acqusition while calling and still have the higher power for long range and targets.

Or the Opitic zone has the Weaver Grand Slam 4.5 X 14 a very good scope on sale for just $319. Have one on my carry rifle a 22-250 and it's great.

my favorite scope if money was no object would be a horus for about $750 that is set up for varmints. horus vision it is 6 to 26 power and the grids are spacedfor varmints

the horus scopes have grids that you can use to shoot with precision without "clicking" the Scope

I bought a horus visoin hawk for about $500 and am looking forward to it for pd shooting but it is only 3 X 12 power

I have two bushnell 4200 6 X 24 mil dot scopes........ and love them.... for $400 to $500..... I always shoot my best groups with one of the bushenells

I think for good value the simmons master series for $ 200 or so 6 X 24 mil dot are supposed to good and super repeatable....

I have a Leupold VX-III 4.5-12x50mm on my .204 and I love it. On my .22-250, I have a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40mm and I've discovered that 6.5 power isn't quite low powered enough for the "close in" shots. The 4.5x has been great. If you're considering Leupold, I'd highly recommend the Varmint Hunter's reticle. Both of my scopes have them and they are terrific.

Regarding a 3-9x, I've just experienced too many occasions where 9x wasn't enough. I find long range groundhogs require more umph....

I am no expert by any means but i am taken by the quality and price of the Burris Fullfield line of scopes. The ballistic plex rectical seems to be pretty dandy. I haven't used it yet in the field but i do expect good results. Lee

I have a 6.5 to 20 on my 204 but I don't use it for a calling rifle, only pds or coyotes over carcasses.I have several calling rifles in different calibers and they all wear 4 to 12 Leupolds except a 17 fireball that has a 4.5 to 14 Nikon with mil-dot that I like pretty well. I guess I should say that I hunt in pretty open country which would have an effect on my choices.

Both my calling/PD rifles wear 4X12's. I have never owned a Luppy but hear they are great even up on 18 power they maintain clarity. If that is in your price range I do not see how you could go wrong. I do not persoanally think you need an 18 power scope. But I am not a die hard Prarie Dogger either that takes 400-600 yards shots so an 18 power may be better for that. I hunt the small critters only a few times ayear when i got nothing else to do like fish or kill the big dogs.

I use the 6.5 - 20 Leupold and it is the ticket for a .204. Dialed down makes a good calling scope and dialed up makes a good PD scope. Clear edge to edge at any power. Spend the bucks now and you will have no regrets. Buy something cheap and you will be wanting to trade it soon enough - and will take a beating on a trade.
