Scope for .223

I have an AR15 .223 ordered from Detech.

I will use the rifle primarily for coyotes. What would power scope should I put on top of this bad boy.
I'm thinking a 3X9 or 3.5X10 Is the 4.5X14 getting a bit to big??

Well, the minimum magnification on those scopes is 3x or 3.5x or 4.5x. There's not much difference between 3x to 4.5x power so the big difference is in the maximum magnification.

14x is a lot more powerful than 9x. Seeing how you're from Colorado, I suspect you're more likely to find yourself hunting in areas with extended shooting distances. Higher magnification could come in very handy for those long shots or for target shooting or for nailing a couple of prarie dogs. You've already decided to get a variable scope, so the weight/sixe difference between a 3-9x scope vs a 4.5-14x scope is not really a factor either.

I always start off a coyote stand with my scope set at lower power like around 4x-6x in case one sneaks up close or is a fast mover. If I need to I can always go to 12x or higher for the coyote that hangs up way out there and I have time to adjust the scope.

Another scope that I have been pleased with so far which I feel is a great value for the money is a Pentax Gameseeker 4-12x40 with the precision plex reticle. I got one delivered for $119.00 and put it on my new AR in 6X45 and after a couple of trips to the range I have found it to be clear and bright with solid adjustments. Just something else to think about. BigJ

I shoot Leupold but thats not relavent so. I find it harder to get on close predators, inside 100 yards, if they are moving, with my 4.5X14 than with my 3.5X10, they are on similar rifles.
depends on what you do but I find little use for power over 10. 400 yard pdogs the 14 is cool but you can hit them just fine at 10, just cant see the carnage as well.LOL
So if long range is the days plan: heavy barrel 22-250 4.5X14, for general calling, lite barrel 22-250 3.5 X10. I also have heavy barrel with 10X.
Man you need a lot a guns!!!

My calling rifles have 1-4X to 1.5-5X scopes on them.

I used higher powers many years ago. It took me many years to get rid of the higher powers.

Take it from there.

hello...if being used for a calling rifle pick a 2x7 or 3x9 spend two or three c-note's...pick the brand of your choice...jack robert's is correct a 1x4-1.5-5 or such..i know will work...i just don't have the gut's yet ??? if you are in the plain's your situation may be different..."however" here in the rolling sagebrush coyote's called to the 50 yard range is common...i have lost more coyote's than i care to mention because i was cranked up to 8 or 9 power...only to try & hit a moving coyote that was 10-30 yard's away & couldn't pick him up !! all that being said i honestly think the 3x9 power scope is the most versatile combo out there...then you can become more specific to your's need's later...
