scope for a varmint rifle?

I am trying to figure out what scope to clamp on my rem 700 stainless fluted synthetic stocked 223 rifle that I recently procured via trading off some other guns that sat around and collected dust for too long.

I have 4 or 5 Nikons (buckmasters and a monarchs) that I like very well, all are 3-9 x 40's on top of deer and coyote type rifles.

As a result I am leaning towards a Nikon Monarch 4-16 x 42. or something in that price range.

Is there a big advantage to getting a 50 mm objective or not really.

I do like to keep the scope low to the gun, but maybe the bigger objective advantage would outweigh the higher mount needed?

what are your thoughts and suggestions for consideration?

I'm using weaver Grand Slams on my savage model 12s, 6-20X44 duplex varmint dot.

Very clear , repeatable dialing and still low to the barrel ( center of bore to center of optic 1.65" )

the clearest, most light transmitting scopes i've looked through were 50mm. check out a vortex viper 50mm you wont be disappointed.

mostly looking at ground hogs and varmint type critters probably 400 yards and mostly less than that. and poking holes in paper once in a while.

Maybe some day down the road prairie dogs.
 
I have a 5-20-44 bdc monarch and i love it. Its a lot of scope but very clear and functions very well. Best money i have ever spent on a scope.
 
Hey Cowpoke, based on your response, I think your current thinking of a 4-16 Monarch is right on target! That is right in a range that has a lot of flexibility.
 
The Monarchs are good scopes. I have several of them. The 4-16 would be a good choice. They are a good value scope.

Monarchs are a nice scope, I am also a big fan of the Weaver Grand Slams that mkg mentioned. They are a real sleeper.

I agree !
I see no need for a 50mm myself.
