Scope for AR 15

Hello, I'm new to the forum and need assistance on selecting a scope for my RRA LAR-15 flat-top. Currently I have a ATN 5x33L scope that came with the gun and hate it enormously. It has a 500 yard rangefinder and illuminated reticle but the 5x doesn't "reach" that far when shooting at a small target. Plus the 33mm objective fails to gather enough light when hunting at dusk.

I'd like to keep the price low and get roughly 3.5-10 or 4-12X with a 44-50mm objective. I'm wondering if the larger scope will cause problems with operating the charging handle and cause mounting difficulty. Plus the scope has to "fit" the rifle, ie. look like it's supposed to be on an AR. I want it to look mean.

Burris FFII 4.5-14X42 bal. plex w/AO. No problems w/charging handle. $380 in Midway catalog, but they run specials occasionally.

How's the quality on the scopes available in The Sportsman's Guide? I know you get what you pay for...I mean some scopes go for $75. The ATN was about $200. I know one thing for sure...NO TASCO scope will ever grace my rifles ever again. I have a 3-9X40 on my 10/22 and it's starting to fog up around the outside of the obj lens. It's barely used and stays in a gun safe. I'm glad it only cost $40.

Here is a list of what I am using on my AR's.

Leupold VX-II 6-18x40
Weaver Grand Slam 4.75x40
Weaver Grand Slam 6-20x40
Weaver V16 4-16x42
Konus 3-12x50
Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14X42 bal. plex
Simmon Blazer 6-24x50

I have really been impressed lately with Weaver scopes. That Konus scope that I have has been a good scope also for the money. It was $120 and it comes with a sunshade and has an illuminated reticle. The Simmons is OK but but is a prime example of you get what you pay for. I have not had a chance yet to try the Burris but if its anything like their pistol scopes I am sure I am going to like it. The Leupold is a very good scope. But of all the scopes I have the Leupolds are the only ones I have had problems with. I have had to send 3 of them back to get fixed.

I always recomend Leupold first for many reasons. Quality & performance, eye relief, warranty. Many other brands excell in one or two areas but fall short in others. This does not make them bad if those areas are your interest. Eye relief alone can improve target aquisition and shootability in all situations. Also for scope mounting as you mentioned the charging handle. The best way I found is an Armalite one piece scope mount allows the scope to be mounted forward correctly, even with the charging handle. About $100 but there are a couple brands that are less money and one that is more. Here is a link to some discounted optics from a board advertiser. Good Luck. http://www.clearanceoptics.com/
