Scope for Browning SA-22

I just got a Browning SA-22 and need advise on a good scope to put on it. I do a little of squirrel hunting with dogs in thick steep mountains so it has to be able to take abuse. Really what I need to know is should I get a dove tail mount or whatever and put a standard style scope on it or put a regular mount on it and get a long eye relief scope? and which long eye relief scope do you all recommend? Ideally a red dot scope with a magnification adjustment from 1-7 or so would be perfect but I have never heard of such a thing. I don't want to spend more then $250 maybe 3 but definitely no more then that.

Does your rifle take a cantilever mount with the base on the barrel and extending back over the receiver? If so you may have eye relief problems with most scopes. I mounted a straight tube 4x on ours. That let me slide the scope back enough for proper eye relief. Look at a straight tube variable in the 1.5-4.5 or 1.75-5 range. Or maybe a shotgun scope with extra eye relief. Large scopes look awkward on the tiny Browning.

Weaver base mounted cantilever style over the receiver will be the way to go, that is after you tap the rear sight out of its dovetail. Just keep in mind that many scopes are too big to look right on this petite rifle and many or most scopes will not give much eye relief since the back of the front bell will hit the front ring before the scope is far enough back to have proper eye relief.
