Scope for Marlin 1895

I just purchased a Limited Edition Marlin 1895 in 45-70. It has a 18.5" Bull Barrel, and is stainless /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I want to put a low power scope on it in quick release rings. Without removing the rear sight or using a scout scope, what are my best options for doing this? What scopes are you all using on your marlins?

Thanks CZ

I like a good aperture sight (peep sight) and wouldn't scope mine at all. If I were to scope my rifle it'd be super low power, small and compact, and mounted right down as low as it could go on the receiver. In a fixed power I'd go for a 2 1/2X or 3X with a small objective and something like a 1 3/4x5x20X, or 1 3/4x6x32X in a variable mounted low. For a recticle a German #4 or #4A, or a good dot in the center of the crosshair works alright. Something like this won't ruin the handling ability and balance too badly, or add too much objectionable weight. Keeping it fast and responsive would be key to adding glass to such a rifle IMHO.

GC,

The scope would only be mounted for a float trip for moose i have planned for next fall. and maybe for black bear out of a stand. Thats why I want the quick release rings I'll leave it off for all my fishin trips where it will only be used as protection.

Does anybody know how good the vx-111 eye relief is in 1.5x5x20 it's listed at 5.3 to 3.7 does that mean it will work anywhere in that range, or does it change as the power is turned up?

Thanks CZ

VXIII 1.5-5x20HD is my favorite, but goin' on my 35 Colonel when it's done. VXII 1-4x20 is also good, and on mine now. Got by for several years with a Weaver Classic 2.5x20 with no complaints, but not as good of an eyebox as the Leupys. It's goin' on my bud's 444 for our upcoming bear hunt. My other bear huntin' partner has a Burris 1.75-5x on his, although it shattered the ocular glass on the first one. My 444 also broke a Bushnell trophy red-dot in like 7 shots(not sure what I was thinkin there). I would not put anything bigger than the above mentioned scopes on it.If you go Leupold, I recommend the HD. As far as QD's, Talleys are the strongest and look the best. I've also used Warnes and Weavers without any failures....

2muchgun,

Which of the QD's have the best return to zero on them? I'd rather buy the best then the prettiest. And I'm willing to carry a torque wrench if need be, as I've heard that is your best bet for keeping the same point of aim.

Thanks CZ

Are you sure you don't want to go with a scout scope? That's how I have my 1895 set up, and it works great.

Look at the XS sights full length sight base. It has a rear ghost ring and can be conventionally scoped or scout scoped. I have the older style with scout scope which I love but this is very nice. I prefer a fixed power 1x or 2x for your application that you describe. Get a heavy reticle which ever you decide on. For QD's I have the Leupold and heartily endorse them.

I would go with an appeture rear sight ..... a protected ghost ring if you want more protection.

But scope wise ...... no scope in my opinion ..... an EOTech AA battery model .... or the Bushnell Holosight ..... on a scout mount just ahead of the rear peep sight .... always spend the extra "dough" for a AA battery model ..... it gets REAL OLD buying those expensive, short lived and HARD TO FIND "N" batteries!!!

I think that the EOTech can be purchased with lever arms now ..... no tools needed for a "quick dismount"!

Many of our troops in Iraq tote these on their rifles .... and they LIKE'EM!!

Three 44s

My brother has the scout scope and I have a red dot on my guide gun. One thing I will suggest is the wild west trigger it is the best improvment I made. I also got the wild west ejector but the trigger is a nice improvment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
