Scope for my AR???

I need some ideas on what scope to get for my bushmaster modular 16. I want something that is going to be nice and light weight but still offer enough magnification for shots out to 300 yards on fox and coyotes. What do you guys think?

I have a Burris B-plex 4.5-14 on my ar and I really like it. However for a 16 inch barrel, 300 yard max, and small critters not in the picture I would look at a 3-9 or similar.
Burris B-plex 3-9
Sightron SI 3-9 with mill dot
or even the Simmons Aetec 2.8-10 are all pretty good scopes worth a look and can be had under $150 although you would have to go used of the burris to make that price.

Right now I have a 3-9x40 Leupold Rifleman scope on my 20" RRA I like it, clear optics, not too big and it works really well at dawn and dusk especially if you turn it down to 6x. I got it at WalMart for right at around $200. I'm looking to upgrade pretty soon. As accurate as this rifle is I think it deserves a little better. I'm thinking the 10x Super Sniper.

I realy like the Leupold 2.5-8 VXIII series, they are light and compact, they are also one of the clearest scopes I've seen. The power range is very useful from in your face to 300 yards is no problem on coyotes. If you want ultra compact and shots rarely exceed 200 yards you should also like the 1.5-5X20 VXIII, but for a more general use it's hard to beat the 2.5-8.

I'm using a Burris Signature 6-24x44mm on my RRA 24". The whole rig is so heavy I couldn't say if the scope is that heavy. Pulled a 3/4" 3 shot 225yd group last week with Rem. premier varmint 55gr factory ammo. Will shoot 1/2" @ 100yds pretty regular. Sits awful low on my flat top even though I'm using Warne ultra high rings. Not an off hand gun by any means.

For only 300 yds. it'd probably help to have a simple ballistic reticle, so with that in mind, i'd go for a lower-medium powered scope with a simple plex reticle that the lower post goes down to about 1.5-2.5 MOA below the x-hair (at the scope's highest power), for the simplest ballistic/ranging reticle system around. It's fast, easy, and just as effective as any other ballistic reticle with a little practice, and probably a little cheaper than a ballistic reticle.

My 4-12X Burris Compact nets me 2.7 MOA to the plex reticle's lower post tip at 12X, and gets me to 350 yds. trajectory compensation with my rig. It helps to research tactical apps. tho with scope reticles, but once understood with a decent laser 300 yd. shots are a cinch in good conditions when game gives u some time to apply the system.

I went ahead and got a EOTECH holosight for my AR. I got the one that runs on AA batteries. It should work fine for shots out to 200-250 yards which is about as far as I usually shoot anyway.

I'll take her out and shoot her later today and see how it does.

I figure this will be really good for night hunting. With it being dark about 3/4 of the time here in alaska in the winter lighted reticles are nice. With the 1 MOA dot it should still only cover 2.5" at 250 yards that should be precise enought for shooting fox/coyotes.

Yep, small center dot is nice and since it's a red-dot, you're not going to have to worry about finding the reticle when it's dark out.

I took it out and shot it today. I was originally concerned about accuracy but it turned out ok. After initially sighting in at 25 yards I moved out to 100. This is where my first problem started. I was using a diamond type target and the diamonds lacked contrast at that distance without any magnification making it kind of hard to aim at the center. My first few groups at 100 yards where 3-4". To solve this problem I got a few black circle targets. They had a 5-6" black circle in the center. With this as an aiming point my groups got MUCH better. The red dot showed up very well on the black background and aiming for the center of the circle was a lot easier than the diamon target. Groups shrunk right down to 1-1 1/4 inch averages for 3 shots, with some coming in much tighter. I also found these targets easier to aim at 200 yards, turning in 2 1/2-3" groups with a center hold on the black dot. With a 200 yard zero I was able to routinely take out clay pigeons out to 250 yards. I would have to aim at the to of the pigeon to break it at 250. 300 yards was pretty much out of reach, not so much because I couldn't put the dot on a pigeon at 300 as it was due to the raimbow tradjectory of the 68gr MHP out of my short barrel.

I took her out for a test drive tonight predator calling. At no time was I able to see far enough even with a light to feel handicapped by the lack of magnification. Even in the most open areas I could find shots past 200 yards were pretty much unavailable. When dimmed the holosight was very easy to find and aim in the dark. I set up a few coyote carboard silhouettes with reflective tack eyes at a few sights and could always aim accurately at reasonable ranges using the surfire light.

I'm pretty pleased with my decision. Now I just have to find some predators.

Yep, I use the EOTech 512, too.

I figure I'll be good out to about 300yds or so.

Sweet setup, Armalite?

I love those midlengths

Not to change the subject but what is a m-4 feed ramp? I have seen this term before but don't know what it is.

This thread is all you need to understand the feedramp stuff.

Nice looking rig Blacksheep-- how far out r u going with it??

My AR has the 4.5-14X Burris Ball. Plex, and gets me to about 500+/- on calm days with pretty good effect from the 69 Nosler Comp.

Mine is getting out to 300-350 yds. It's a carbine so that's ok with me. I'm using 52gr. A-max and getting 1/4" to 1/2" One holers are the norm.
