Scope Lens Covers- Good or Bad

Just put a new Nikon scope on my Model 70 and I am debating on whether or not to buy some flip-up end caps or not. And if I do what brand is the best. Any advice would be great .I use this gun 99% of the time for coyote hunting and 1% for deer hunting. Don't want to spend the extra money if they're not worth it but on the other hand if I should have a pair I don't want a piece of junk.

I have the Butler Creek flip up caps on most of the rifles I use often. I carry them muzzle up position and having that front scope pens covered really helps keep the crud out. Spring loaded and flip up out of the way, only about $8 or so. I won't use the kind that you have to look through...I think they are called the Blizzards or something like that. Personally, I think they are a great addition for your scope.

I use the Butler Creek also. Well worth the money. Look at the cost of scope replacement if you dont protect the glass some how, then decide if you think it worth the $16 to protect it. They also help keep the snow off your lense while you are walking to or from the stand.

I just put the Butler Creek flip ups on 3 different Zeiss scopes last week. I've had a set on a 2-7 Leupold on a turkey hunting shotgun for a few years and they work great.

Since I hunt in the rain so much, those scope covers are very nice to have.
On dry days I just leave them open.
They're nice for keeping dust and fingerprints off the lenses when you're storing the rifle, too.

Yeah, the Butler Creeks are fine. I never tried any of the others, though.

I've used butler creek caps for years and broken so many that I can't keep count.
I started switching over to scope shield type covers and have been very happy with them.

The only exception to the rule on flip up covers I've seen is Burris scopes, the eye bell rotates with power setting so the flip ups are a pain. On all my other scopes I like them with my Burris scopes I do not.

Yes.... Butler Creek !!
Cheap and well worth it.

Once you get used to them, you can open them as fast as tripping the saftey .

I keep mine closed when walking about. On stand I open them ,unless the weather is bad.

I thought I was the only one. Everyone else brags on flip-ups. When the weather is bitter cold and the hunting is good I snap them off.

I've snapped quite a few of the Butler Creeks in the cold as well, but keep using them because they seem to be the best thing out there. The last two season's I've been putting a neoprene Scope Shield over the Butler Creeks to keep them from snapping when they get hit hard by sticks/branches on the snowmachine. I only snapped one set last year, but that was my fault.

I've been kicking around the idea of getting some. Do they stay shut or are they prone to coming open when you're walking/carrying it?

They stay shut when walking or carrying, unless they really snag on your jacket or something. That's another reason I put the Scope Shield over them, so they don't open and pack my scope full of snow.
