Scope me

OK, AR will be here in a week or so.

How about some scope & mount recommendations or suggestions ?

Here's the givens.
1. I'm cheap.
2. Old & tired eyes
3. Most shots will be 100 yards or less. Usually less
4. I know nothing about AR's yet
5. Did I mention I'm cheap ?

AR is a RRA Coyote, 20" barrel & .223

Buy a Simmons and you'll be paying for a scope twice.

Cheap doesn't apply when paying for garbage.

For me, a cheap scope starts at about $150. You can buy something in this price range and feel comfortable that it will hold up. Weaver Classics, 3200s, Prostaffs, FF2s, etc. The Weavers are my favorites of the bunch.

At a bare minimum, at least spend about $70 and get a Bushnell Banner......

I've got two prostaff's and they are reasonably clear and hold their zero well once I got them zero'd. The two that I have don't seem to track consistently, but again, once I got them were I wanted, they seem to stay. These guns ride everywhere in the rifle rack on my 4-wheeler and do a ton of bouncing around, so if they were going to move around, they would have done so. That said, they are as cheap as I'd go.

Another scope that I've had good luck with and is very durable in that price range or close to it, is the Burris fullfield II.

I've tried a variety of simmons', tasco's and a vortx crossfire and can tell you from experience, that it is alot cheaper to pay just a bit more on the front end. These brands just wouldn't hold up to any abuse in terms of holding zero.

Burris, Weaver, Redfield... all can be had for around $150.00 and that is about as cheap as old tired eyes can afford to squint through.

Randy, You might want to look at the Mueller Optic website as well...I've had two of theirs for several years and they have a decent warranty..

I've heard good things about Pentax and Vortex. I think they are around that $150 dollar range. Some of the lower end Simmons scopes are better than their cost.

I figure with a .223 the most damaging thing to your scope will probably be incidental drops or dings from bouncing it off stuff.

I wouldn't over look the Bushnell Banners is you can see through them well they seem to work well enough for hunting. I wouldn't suggest them for a long range competition or something.

I would take a hard look at the Burris Fullfield II 2-7 E1 or whatever the new model is called. It is a good inexpensive scope, not too big, and plenty of power for a predator rifle. TTT

About $75 out the door, you don't like it, take it back!

Here is a thread talking of such a scope:

Comes complete with a set of flip-up lense covers. I have one and have been quite impressed with it.

Pass on the Centerpoint. I have 2 and I've broke 2.
1 was my fault, the other was the scope.
And I really get tired of having to replace scopes and then
sight in the new one.
Same with Simmons. Had simmons for years and finally broke it.
Replaced it with a new Simmons and haven't been real happy
with it.

I'm rough on guns and scopes. Need something that can take
a beating or 2 or 3.

I usually need to look, feel, etc before I buy something.
Then I compare prices, shipping, etc and buy then.
I'm cheap.

Good choice I have a 3-9, and 2-7. typical Leupold long eyerelief.

They've been good so far.

congrats on your AR purchase Randy. Have you decided on a mount? One piece or 2. I went with the Burris PEPR and really like it.
