how does paralax come into play with a centerfire scope on a rimfire? i have a bushnell elite 4200 2.5-10x40 that id like to make home to on a .22 mag. i thought i remember reading somewhere that it wasnt wise to do?
I hardly ever buy a new scope anymore. Just scan the classifieds, here & elsewhere & see what comes up at a good price. You can step it up a lever or 2 in quality over buying new. A dependable factory lifetime warranty can ease worries about problems.

Unless you are target shooting for tiny groups at 50 yrds or less you won't notice a thing . Use your scope if its a hunting rig .

3-9x is generally enough magnification for 22 mag hunting distances. But I personally find my 3-9x just a hair too weak for shooting groups at 100 yards for sight in. Guess it depends on your distances. I like to sight mine in at 100 yards and just wish I could see my aiming point a little better. I think a 4-12x would be good. I bought a Weaver 3-9X32 Classic Rimfire scope for mine before I realized my need for more magnification. It is a well made, compact and streamline scope and I still like it a lot.
A LOT of guys from rimfirecentral like this Mueller APV for $115.
quote=EDP]What happens closer than 50 yards? [/quote] To put it in simple terms we can all understand a scope with a 100 or 150 yrd paralax setting built in your average centerfire scopes when shooting 50 yards or closer may be 1/4 to 1/2 in off . Thats why rimfire target shooters like an adjustable objective scope or parallax set at 50 yards rimfire scopes . I have had plenty of 3x9 centerfire scopes mounted on 22's , and killed many squirrels hit where I aimed . Unless you are seriously punching paper its not an issue . My son can shoot 1 hole cloverleafs at 50 yrds with his 17M2 with a 3x9 centerfire scope mounted on it . Yes he is a target shooter and has some nice 22 target only guns with good target scopes but thats a whole different world . Don't get hung up on paralax unless its a really cheap scope that is blurry up close .
My .22mag is a 'fun' gun. Kill a squirrel, fox, vermin, pop can...whatever. An honest, no nonsense rimfire that has a no nonsense scope on it, mine being a 3-9x40, duplex...
I actually looked at thAt same scope at academy last week was on sale for 179 but I got a fullfield 11 LRS from a fellow member so far I really like it. I think I'm going to try and get me a Six X 2x12x50 with I'll feticide for my 22-250
