Scope opinion?

I'm looking at buying a Savage 93R .17 HMR that I will be using for groundhog and squirrel, but plan to use it on fox (head shots) as well. I like most, don't want to go too cheap or too exspensive for my needs. If I'm going to use it for night hunting with shots under 100 yards with a 500K CP red lens, what would be a good scope to get? I'm looking at the Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x50mm for $299 or the Leupold VX-II 3x9x50mm for $350 (Not wanting to spend that much.) Both have lifetime warranties and look identical on paper. If I could get away with the 40mm, the Nikon 3x9 would only be $199 (at the maximum w/o wife's approval  .) At that distance, will the 40mm get the job done? Any luck with the Nikons?

Thanks,
Mike

Nikons are great, but I have only used monarchs. I have a 5.5-16.5 44mm nikon monarch. A buddy of mine has a leapold var. III 6-20 40mm. The nikon is definatly clearer, especially in low light conditions. I don't suspect nikon buckmasters to be like the monarchs. What I recommend is Sightron. I have a 4-14 44mm. It's great. I beleive it was $300, but a lower power version would be cheaper. You won't be disappointed. I'm making my recommendation by price. I have the sightron on a .223 that I night hunt with. looks great at night. I have a 56mm springfield tactical. The springfield has a bigger field of view, but the clarity is no better than the sightron. If nikon makes a set 6 power with a 50mm obc., that would be a great night scope. You don't need alot of power at night, and the lower the power the clearer.

I have never owned a quality scope until recently. Before I used a 3-9x50 Simmons. We killed a lot of coyotes with it. Worked great off of the bench. Before hunts I always go and shoot a few times just to make sure it is still on. It was always off. Once it was 9 high and 8 right. Never really trusted it and we went through a lot of ammo keeping it on. Two days ago I purchased a Leupold VX III 4.5-14x50. Mounted it and went to the range took 4 shots to get it dead on. Shots 5,6,and,7 you could cover up with a dime. The VX II will be just as accurate and you dont have to have a 50mm, the 40 will do. I have always wanted a leupold and I am not disapointed even after spending the money. One time purchase with a lifetime guarantee, You cant go wrong. The money is worth it to me. I hated having a coyote coming in and you hopeing the scope is on. You have too many things to worry about besides your equipment when the time comes.

Just picked up the Buris 4.5x14 balistic plex for a new to come yet hmr. I have a 93 with a 6x18 on it with the 4-plex type xhair. Think the balistic plex will be the ticket with 100-150-200-250 holds Dots and the 14x should be plenty and the 4.5 for night. Got it shipped for $325.

Thanks guys! After looking into the Sightron, I found a SII 3-9x42 that looks very similar to the Leopold VXII series. It looks hard to beat for $199! It's about $80 less that a Leupold 3-9x40. I don't mind spending the extra if it's justified. Any other experiences with the Sightron? I do like their over the counter lifetime replacement.

MikeH,
Howdy bud.!
I don't know alot about the sightron but i've read there is a big difference in he quality of the s11.
I checked the prices you stated >>you might need to do some shopping my 17hmr shooting friend!!The 3x9 buckmstr is $164 @ dnrsports.net,i'd however look on down to 3x9 monarch>$239$209 @natchezss.com and IMO you'll only need to call in that fox.
I have a nikon monarch 5.5x16.5-44mm on my CZ 17hmr.I find that magnafication >way overkill for hunting,I don't think i've ever moved it off 5.5 except at the range.Anyway good luck in your choice>ME

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the SII.
I had an SI I didn't care for. It was way to picky on eye relief. The SII's I have are great optics.
