Scope or Eotech on an R15?

Hello Folks. I am a new member here and this is my first post.

I have just purchased a Remington R15 with 18" barrel. Being that The 18" barrel model is more of a light and quick handling gun, I am considering either an Eotech sight or a low to mid power range scope for it. I figure this type of rifle will excel at closer, faster moving targets. But I also would want to be able to hit a coyote sized target out to 300 yards if the situation ever arises. What do you recommend?

Here is a pic of the gun:

for my old eyes 150 yards are less the eotech are awesome.i think you would be pushing it at 300 but the close running shots the eotech are hard to beat.i have a 3-9x40 meopta on my DMPS and love it.

+1 on the Eotech and Nikon 1.5x6x42

I had an Eotech with a 4x magnifier on my AR and it was an awesome setup. Very quick to get on target. The downside is that it weighed 29oz with the magnifier. The 3x magnifier is about 1/2 the weight of the 4x and I would suggest it if you go with a magnifier. I now have a Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5x6x42 which I like even better than the Eotech setup. Here is a review I did on the Nikon. Both are great setups but I prefer the Nikon as I like the crosshair more than the illuminated dot. The Nikon is about the same price as the Eotech without the magnifier.

Thanks for the reply. I will consider the Nikon scope although I am a Leupold guy. The dangerous game range scope makes sense to me.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I would like to hear more so keep them coming if you like. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Why not both

Burris makes a ring that has a weaver base on top of it

check'em out

That looks pretty good. I like those Burris rings. Do you have any idea on the weight and the cost of that setup?

I have a EOTECH 512 on mine and it will do me fine because I hunt in thick forests and my shots wont be 300 , maybe 100to 200 and thats if Im in the fields which were we hunt they mostly stay in thick cover.

I've got an Eotech and I gotta say that I love it. However, for the situations you are describing, I would probably opt for a low, variable power scope. I've never used the Millet DMS scope that was mentioned earlier, but from what I've seen of it it looks like it would fit the bill nicely. I think past 150 - 200 yds you would really be at a disatvantage with the Eotech. If shots were coming quick in thick cover inside of 100 yds, I don't think you could beat it. I used an Eotech on my calling gun a year or two ago and had a yote come out at about 400 yds. I could see it good through a pair of field glasses, but when I went to put the red dot on it it became invisible. I believe the extra definition you get through a magnified lens would be more beneficial than quickly getting on target. Get both and try them out. For general plinking and fast, close targets, the Eotech is in a class by itself in my opinion.

Thanks again for all the repiles.

I am leaning towards the low power scope.

Curt B, thanks for the suggestion on the Millet tactical.

Scramjet, I would like to get both....someday. I would like to go with some QD mounts for this reason. Finances will prohibit me from getting both now.

A friend will be letting me borrow his Eotech for a while, so I am hoping this will help me decide once and for all.

I put a Nikon Prostaff 3 - 9 x 40 on my R-15. It is very fast at 3 x and has the capability of going to 9 x for longer shots. I like it really well. Also it came already camo painted!

I was going to tell you to look at the 1-4X Bushnell Banner, but in looking for a link I found this.

Bushnell TROPHY 1-4X illuminated

First of all, I have several 1-4 Bushnells on deer guns and they are great for our deer drives and shooting at running deer as with the scope set on 1 power you keep both eyes open and can follow the deer very well. If you need to scope out a standing deer at distances I turn the scope up to 4X and can usually see what I need to.

I have an M4 that I just built so I can retire the old AR rifle that I have been using for 30 years. I was looking for a red dot or lighted reticle scope of low power, much like you are asking about. Seems as though I might have found what I am looking for. I really like these scopes. Now the problem.

I can't seem to find out anything about these scopes. There is a lot of info about the Banner, but I can't find any info on this Trophy. Bushnells web site doesn't even list this scope.

I would like to know if the dot is illuminated, permanent, or what?

I am going to try to find out a little more, but I think I have made my decision already.

I put a 3.5-10x40 on my AR15 Carbine for coyote. I have a similar setup with an Aimpoint CompML2 also.

I prefer the traditional scope. Here is why. Coyotes blend into the background well. Many shots are low light or the coyote is partially covered by brush ect..

A traditional scope allows you to get a better sight picture!

It took me a long time to figure out the usefulness of a magnified scope. I finally get it now.

If you're a Leupy guy, remember that they have a heck of a discount for LEO and current military members. Quite a few of my friends at work have used their discount, quick and easy. There was a thread on here about it awhile back with the contact info. I don't know if I could find it or not.

I have an EoTech on my KelTec SU-16C and one on my Keltec PLR-16. I like them both.

On my RRA Coyote Rifle I have the Millett DMS-1 1x4. It is a little heavy (but most 30mm tubes are) but I love the reticle and the illumination mode. It wouldn't be my choice for long range varmints, but I like it best for yotes.

The Burris Red Dot linked above looks pretty interesting. I might be tempted to try one on one of the two new ARs that I am building. One could even find a place on one of my 1894 Marlins.

Has anyone here had any experience with the Burris Fastfire Red Dot?

I wasn't aware Leupold had a discount for military and LE.

I'll have to look into it. Any information you could provide would be appreciated.
