Scope Q's...

Lets say somebody (maybe me) is picking up a Stevens in .223. What scope would you fellas recommend i mount on it? I ask because i know this gun is pretty popular around here...just kinda curious as to what you guys like matched with this gun..

What is your intended purpose for this rifle? I only ask as there are different scopes for different jobs. Calling rifle, long range varmint rig, or just to punch paper?

Just a plain ol' calling rifle. I would think any 3-9x40 would do. I am kinda thinking about a bushnell trophy (in that mag)....Good idea, bad idea? (this a budget build...obviously)

I have Bushnell Sportsman's in 3X9X40 and 4X12X40 AO on Handi rifle .223's, Bushnell Banner 3X9X40's on a Stevens .223 and .243 and a Banner 4X12X40 AO on a Vanguard .223.

I also have several other of those model lines on other rifles. No complaints with any of them.

I have fixed 4x and 6x scopes on my calling rifles. You're not shooting long range when calling.

A leupold 2-7x33 is a great calling scope.
It gives a larger field of view than a 3-9x40, and is lighter & more compact. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

3-9 is very popular for a reason. They do it all. it may not be perfect in all situations but it will be adequate for anything you want to do. Plus, in a budget build, they offer the best value simply because they are the ones that are out there in the greatest numbers. I really like the 2-7 in compact sizes also but I feel 3-9 is more versitile.

I have used several of the Cabela's Pine Ridge scopes and they are good and in the budget price range. If you want to spend a little more money you can get a Nikon buckmaster 3 to 9 for around 200 and I think they are a good value.

I like the nikon prostaff 3X9 for about a hundred& a half, have one on my go to calling rifle, abolt 243wssm works well at nite with and with out lite.(x is nice for sighting in,at least with my old eyes

JWP..for a "budget" scope..go get a nikon prostaff in 2x7x32..nikon market's them as a shotgun scope that's because the parallax is set @ 75 yard's..who care's that's about where called coyote's show up anyway..they run around $130 buck's..despite what the internet jockey's say..buying a 3x9 or 4x12 in that price range is a waste of money..another nice calling scope would be a nikon buckmaster in a fixed 4-power..run's about $160..anything above those choice's save up & get a leupold VXII..JMO..

Brad..your right all ya gotta do is pick up a hunting magazine..they tell ya..heaven forbid if anyone listen's to somebody with actual field experiance /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

You might check your local walmarts. Around here they are clearing out the luepold riflemen 2x7 at $139. Not a great scope by leupold standards, but would give you a leupold at a prostaff price.
Just a thought.

there's some decent deals on factory refurbised Prostaffs. I bought a couple of the refurbished 3x9x40 BDC reticle scopes from Natchez for $110.00 ea.

the BDC reticle does'nt seem as bad on the lower powered Prostaff's as it does on my 6X18 Buckmaster.
