Scope question

I am looking to get a long-range varmint scope but something I could still use on predators. I was looking at Nikon but some people tell me to look at Burris. It will be sitting on a 22-250 Ruger VT.

What do you have and why? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have budgeted $500.00 (less if the wife finds out).

Talk to me folks!

Thanks, Steve

A 4x16x50 Bushnell Elite 4200 would be hard to beat for price and performance. I either have or have owned Nikon, Burris (older Fullfeild), Weaver and Leupold and the 4200 series is the way to go, IMHO.

I've got several different kinds of scopes including a Burris, have yet to be impressed with it. For the price difference I'd go with the Bushnell. However the leupold have always been good quality products.

I luv my Leupold 4.5x14 VarixIII. It has enough magnification for long shots & while set on the low end (4.5x), good for calling. They are not long & heavy like the Elites either which is a plus in my book.
6x power for calling can be a bit much in my area, field of view is limited at close range. A predator that comes in fast & close would be hard to find quickly on 6x to me. If he/she is moving, then it would be even tougher to keep crosshairs on them.

I ordered my 1st Burris 3x9 balistic plex recticle last week for an AR15 rifle, can't comment on them yet.

Take care,
HS

how far are you planning to shoot? i've found that w/ a 4-12 leupold, positive aiming on prairie dogs ceases around 450 yards. beyond that w/ that scope is kind of a guess.

i'd look for a low-end of 6 power for a predator/varminter scope...

I love my Luppy, but for the price concious person, the 4200 ain't bad. I just can't come up with anything bad to say about the Luppy.

Thanks for all the input guys.

Are their any Nikon Titanium shooters out there?

I have two Nikon Monarch’s, a 3.5x10.5x50 for my 30.06 that I use for deer and elk and a 4.5x14.5x44 on my 25.06 that I use on deer and varmints. Both are awesome, very clear and suck in light well.

For my 22-250 I want to reach out and touch something, 300-450 yards, but I also want to get the + or -100 targets too.

My research leans me toward a 5.5x16. The field of view will be tight up close but I would think the majority of shots taken are 100+ yards anyway.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Steve

a major reason i varmint hunt is to stretch my range - push the envelope. i want to drop bullets onto prairie dogs that are standing around at 700 yards... the 'dogs yipping at you at 50 yards are too easy...just not worth the ammo.

I agree but I can't aford to build 2 guns. So I'll have to settle for a little less distance to see things that are a bit closer.

We don't have P-Dogs here we do however have Digger Squirrels. Much smaller but you can get as close as 100 yards without spooking'em. I like to shoot at them between 200-300 yards if possible. Most of the time I am within 50 yards at deer camp though with my old trusty 10/22 Ruger. Still fun though.

What cal. are you shooting out to the 700 yard mark?

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks for all the insight.

I bought a new scope tonight on www.gunbroker.com

I ended up getting the Nikon Monarch UCC 5.5x16.5x44 AO in luster black for $336.00.

I really liked the Nikon Titanium but for the extra $200.00 I didn't like it that much.

My 22-250 should be online soon!

Thanks, Steve

Okay, so here's my two cents... I have a Nikon Monarch 4-12x40AO on my 700VLS in 22-250 and I am very happy with it! I think you will be pleased with the Nikon. Sounds like you found yourself a deal on the $ end, I found mine through riflescopes.com and paid $345.00. Happy shooting!

I purchased a Bushnell Elite 4200 in 6x24 a few months ago, and boy is it a winner. It's the old Bausch & Lomb top of the line scope. The optics are very clear and bright, and it comes with 2 extender pieces, 3 and 5". Mine is a crosshair model. I don't recall if it comes with a dot reticle, but I'm not wild about the dot anyway. Best wishes.
