Scope Ring Lapping

I am ready to get a scope ring lapping Kit. I have looked at the Wheeler kit with the alignment pins and bar and some others with just the lapping bar. Are the pins important? I understand they show you how far the rings are off but if you are going to lap them anyway what is the difference? Do you even use the pins to check?

LOL... my bad.

Unfortunately, the Wheeler and similar pointed alignment bars only tell half the story about ring alignment. The best alignment bars are from Kokopelli, but they're pricey.

If you're using dovetails or two piece bases, then I recommend you buy the Kokopelli accurizing kit which includes the lapping and alignment bars (about $100 plus shipping).

Have you bought your scope yet?

After u lap them and you have the bare metal showing is there anything you need to put on it to prevent rusting over time or will it b ok ?

The Wheelers work better if you match up the flat ends instead of the pointy ends.

I never lapped a ring in my life, although I could see where bedding a one pc. base has merit.
Buy quality bases & rings, and torque them to spec. If it makes you feel better about life, then lap away. Just realize that you may have just limited the use of those rings to that particular rifle/scope combo...

Kokopelli, makes a great product as well, the only reason I didn't do a video using their product is because I only have the Kokopelli kit for my 35mm rings, and I know not many people have 35mm tubes or want to purchase a 150$ lapping kit for one specified tube measurement, I 100% agree with you, the Koko method is superior.

many people don't realize this!!! most ALL receivers have minor inaccuracies in them, if you don't take the error out of your base or top of your receiver by bedding, then all your doing is lapping your rings to fit that specified base or receiver, and might as well keep those rings designated to that weapon. By bedding your base and taking the error out, all I'm basically doing is lapping my rings for surface contact with my tube, the more surface area touching the better hold on the optic.

You can use Kokopelli alignment bars to actually measure the misalignment so that you can assess if shimming or bedding two piece bases is necessary before lapping. If you just start lapping, you could end up taking too much material off, which causes other problems. Granted, a properly installed (usually shimmed or bedded) one piece Weaver/Picarinny base usually gets the ring alignment very close, but some folks prefer other types of bases.

The misalignment between rings can be either a lateral offset between the ring axes or an angular misalignment, or both, The Wheeler pointed ends tell you if there is a lateral offset, but not how much (you can't easily or accurately measure the offset between the points). The flat ends tell you if there is an angular misalignment, and with a good set of feeler gauges you can measure it. So, you need to install them both ways.

The Kokopelli bars allow you to measure both lateral and angular misalignments. They also include a long rod that fits in the end of one bar and allows you to accurately align dovetail and other rotating rings to the barrel. A simple design that works really well.
