Scopes for slug guns

What does everybody have/recommend for a good scope for their shotguns. I have a 870 with a cantiliever rifled barrel and just got rid of my red-dot sight. Looking for some suggestions. Thanks.

I've got a 1.75 - 5 X 20 Burris on my slug gun. (Remington Mod 1100 with Hastings slug barrel) Works great. Dumped quite a few Bambis with it, and can put the slug inside of 2" at 100 yards.

The reticle on my scope is a little different. It has something called "post-plex", which looked a little dorky at first, but is excellent for getting on target in a hurry with a running deer. The vertical crosshair is a heavy post terminating at the horizontal crosshair.

I have a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 on my 1187 cantilever. I hate the stupid shotgun reticles like "Circle X". What were they thinking with that thing?

I think Circle X reticles are more for shotguns shooting a pattern of shot as in turkey hunting than for slug shooting. The circle can be used as a range finder by sizing game up within the circle, and, if presented with a fast moving target swing, get the critter in the circle and slap the trigger!

To each his own! I am a fan of the Bushnell "Circle X" reticle for slug guns. It gives me the option of crosshairs on a standing shot and the "circle" has served me well on running shots, similiar to what a red dot would do.

I agree they are not for rifle shooting, but they have a purpose.

That's pretty close. The difference in my reticle is that the horizontal crosshair is your basic garden-variety crosshair going all the way across the field of view.

Thanks for the help, dunno what I'm gonna do yet but the circle-x mite not be a bad thing because I do get alot of running shots. I guess I got time to think, season doesn't open till december. Also, I've heard that variable power scope sometimes change their zero when you change the magnification...Anybody have that problem or is it not something I should worry about?

In the early years of scopes that could be a concern. It may be a concern today with inexpensive (read that cheap!) scopes. A quality scope doesn't have that malady in today's market. Good top drawer scopes from Leupold VX- III, Nikon Monarch, Burris Fillfield II, Bushnell Elite, Ziess Conquest, Weaver Grand Slam, ect... don't suffer from that old problem.

Jackpine bob, I have an old fixed 4 power Bushnell scope with a crosshair and a post. I'm not even sure how many animals have fallen to that scope. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gifIt is great at first light/last light.Gives me fast target acquistion. BTW it is on an old Parker Hale rifle that has spent countless days in the mountains. The blueing is worn off, the finish is worn off the wood. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gifIt has a lifetime of memories in it. I've pretty much shot everything except maybe caribou with it. I like the scope, it is nearly bullet proof, and I like the reticle, it works. I have had my horse roll on the gun in the scabbard, and I've fallen so hard on shale slides while sheep hunting, that I've flattened the adjustment covers. the scope has always held zero.

Burris has a reticle I think is called a "peep plex" It is a circle in the center of the crosshairs. It is a circle not a dot and it covers the bull at 100 yds. I have it on my Dr.Swift /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif It is awesome for fast target acquisition, and deadly on runners. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I can see it's usefulness for turkey hunting and such, but I can't stand it on a slug gun. What aggravates me more is that all the "shotgun" scopes I could find had the circle x or pro diamond. Bleh. I went with a rifle scope. Some people say that they won't hold up to shotgun recoil/vibration, but it's doing fine so far. I think I've put 30-40 slugs through it. If if breaks, it has a lifetime warranty IIRC. I don't like the smaller objectives on most "shotgun" scopes either.

Think I'm gonna get a good fixed 4x scope.

Never a bad idea. I'd much rather have a first quality fixed than a mid-priced variable. Even on a centerfire rifle, and for a slug shotgun, that makes better sense yet.
