Scouting help

Ive taken 2 coyotes. Probably beginners luck. I need to know whats my best way to scout Indiana farm land. Do I just walk the edges of the crop fields and river and wood lotslooking for tracks and scat? Or should I try and locate them by howling?just any howl or what? Im not familiar with the different ones. Should I wait and scout after its rained for the tracks to be easier to see? Im the type of guy who just goes out and sets up not knowing if the game Im after is even in the area.Im a good shot and have the right tools and can be quiet for quite awhile but I just seem to overlook the obvious but Im learning.
Thanks for the help.

Daryl,
You sound alot like myself,I too just set up.I'm reading as much here to learn but it is kinda slow. Most of the registered users are not hunting now and they will be back to chat when the cold air returns.

I never thought about that. I will have to ask this again later. By your former name as Browning 204 I take it you shoot a 204? Ive got a ruger 204 that Im getting ready to start loading for next week. Just waiting on the dies. Im also shooting a CZ 243.And maybe a 22-250 if the deal goes OK. So anyway Im glad to see that Im not the only blind squirrell in the woods.LOL

I'm definitely no expert, but by using the info I've read on here,I have definitely had better success. I started out about 5 or 6 years ago, with a mouth call. I had beginners luck and got a yote right off the bat. Thinking it would always be that easy, I got discouraged after making a bunch of dry runs. Since the begining of my predator hunting, I've wanted a Foxpro. When I finally had a little over $100 I settled for a Preymaster. Ater all, it was digital. Again I made a bunch of dry runs. Then I found this site! I made a couple of successful trips with the Preymaster. Well, I say successful, because we saw some yotes. They winded us and neither of us took a shot. A month or so later, I bought a used Foxpro from a PM member. I landed more places to hunt, and since the first of the year I've had ten shot opportunites (those are the ones that come to mind right away)and killed two yotes and a fox. As you can tell by the opportunity to kill ratio, I'm still learning. It's in my blood now, and if it doesn't get too commercialized I plan to do it for many years to come!
Good luck, be patient, and keep the wind in your face.

Go over to the Hunting in the East forum. At the top there is a thread called " Calling Tactic's and sounds " Its a good read and will help ya!

Also do a search in there, we have talked alot about scouting in the east in there!

hello, walk the trails & two track roads-look for turds..the more you find the better.i found alarge one at my favorite shooting spot on blm ground a few weeks ago lots of people come & go there and this dog wasn't afraid to leave his mark...no one knows for sure how many coyotes are anywhere?? "remember"the coyote population meaning adult & pups becoming older & more aggresive doesn't peak until probably september-november...you may be calling on deaf ears????nobody home??? this is a great time to scout if the heat doesn't bother you just look for little things...i may be wrong but i wouldn't worry about locator howls...if you have the time set up at sunrise or sunset & not hunt just listen they will usually howl anyway...i'm no pro these are just things i have noticed in my travels.....
